The special preview demo is up on PSN for everyone who has a PS3.  I played totally through it.  It seems interesting to say the least. As I mailed Pale, to me it seems like a brawler with Kameoish attacking, or at least what I gather from the description of that game, and interactive soul wrangling.  It’s sort of cool.

You start out with three "Folks" (aka Creatures, enemies, etc.).  Normally 2 attack and 1 defense.  You then use these guys to form an attack set based off of their abilities.  The abilities vary from generally useful to niche.  Like there is one in the demo who shoots bubbles.  Against normal enemies it’s got a short range and doesn't do much damage but, it’s the only thing that will attack flying you have that early.  You can quickly switch between the set you have equipped by pressing L2 and then assigning new Folks to each one of the face buttons.  For some creatures, especially bosses, you have to use a certain one or combination of ones.  Your not left in the dark on this.

The game has items you can find.  Some of these help your life, some of them are things you collect to unlock "Karmas" (aka Abilities, Levels, etc.) on your Folks (which in turn gives them new abilities, enhancements, or lower there cost to use).  Another of these items are picture books, and that's exactly what they are.  The pictures in the books help show how to defeat some of the more complicated enemies.  If you can't seem to get a Folk to show a blue soul, which means your actually hurting it, then consult the book.  Talking about souls.

As I mentioned above souls have a color.  In the demo there is three colors and each are a different state.  When you see a blue soul that means your attack is doing damage.  A red soul means its time to capture the Folk.  This is how you augment your arsenal and permanently get rid of an enemy.   To initiate capture you press the R1 button.  As of yet I found three types of captures and they all use motion control:

Simple Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on (This one can automatically lock on to multiple souls)
  • Flick the SixAxis up and jerk that soul from its current occupant
    Time Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on
  • Hey wait a minute a gauge showed up and the soul turned green (The last of the three states); what should I do?
  • Wait till the soul turns red and jerk up.  This will fill the gauge on the bottom till...
  • Soul turns and stays red, time to jerk up to finish capture
    Beat Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on
  • Wait the soul is bluish, with a gauge, and seems to be fighting me; we can't have that can we?  Time to knock it around some.
  • Fling the Sixaxis left and then right and then left.  Beating the soul into the ground until it turns red in the middle.
  • Jerk up to wrangle it in.

While this is engaging and a welcome edition that reels you in, it becomes painfully clear that Sony could have used a more sensitive motion sensor when doing the Beat style of capture.  Which makes it my least favorite even though it is the most visceral.  I also believe that this process could have had more immersion with some rumble added.   Here’s hoping that the rumor is true the rumble is coming back and they’ll be an update for this game to use it, while I’m dreaming I like the Batarang back as well.

All and all I did leave a few things out that I hint at for you to find on your own.  I hope that I have enabled you to download the demo and give it a whirl.  I won’t be insulted if it’s not your cup of tea.  Just so you know it clocks in at 1.1 Gig and some change worth of download.  At this rate I might just have to considering swapping my harddrive for a bigger one…  Also, since you’re on the PSN anyway, pick up the Wall-E Trailer .

Anything compared to Kameo is pretty much doomed to be crap...But I have a sickening obsession with ARPGs, so I may end up at the very least trying this game if I ever get a PS3...

I use to love action RPGs, but then I found Fallout some months ago. Every time I try, I always find nearly every RPG since then shallow. Oblivion, which I used to find average, is now horrible. Final Fantasy is far too linear. Don't mention Baldur's Gate. Even my beloved Morrowind feels worse. There are only a few exceptions (Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, etc.).

Now, besides that, it looks like this is shaping up well... Except it's not on the Wii. The Sixaxis is no substitute for the Wiimote.

How they are using the motion wouldn't exactly lend itself as well to the Wiimote in that form.  Easily tweaked though to work.  You know I got Fallout expecting something great but couldn't get past the first little bit.  I may go back to it and give it a whirl again.

I downloaded it and played though both characters' demos. I thought it was pretty awesome.  I'm excited for the final product...

I liked the demo the game was interesting, my only complaints are that the sixaxis while a new take on it (compared to most PS3 games) and the controls itself are clunky.

So everyone knows the last day to get the demo is friday.  I think the PS3 motion specific controls are good in concept but need some tweaking in actuality.  I found that they regular controls where a little clunky, specifically how they did the camera, and sort of variety between the type of Folks you use.

Thats pretty much my complaint also during the spirit capturing in the boss fights or the bigger folks, when you have to swing up when their soul is green to catch them, after you swing the controller up, I tend to lower it back to a "neutral position" so I can comfortably control the game, sometimes when I lower the controller, the game registers it as a swing which penalizes me in the capture meter. But other than that I think the game is interesting and can potentially be fantastic.

Well folklore is out. I still think it's pretty awesome.  The voice acting is not too great but the action is still fun and I like to collect new folks and experiment with them and their powers.

I didn't notice I never posted an impression.  I enjoyed Folklore when I had it rented.  Though I thought the over used assets.  Also I got to through a good chunk of the game as Ellen and then I couldn't go on till I played the other side.  At that point the two stories just aren't different enough that I wanted to do it all over again and I returned it.  Good game but it needed more quests and I actually would have preferred less wondering to in the overworld.

I've played through about an hour and a half so far, though half of that was story stuff (just let me play!)

The battle system is incredibly fun so far...You start off with two "Folks" which are basically your attacks (your little creatures appear to do an attack)...When you take down an enemy Folk's health down enough, its spirit will come out, and you have a chance to absorb it (By shooting out a Ghostbusters-esque beam at it and then flicking the controller up to capture it)...Doing so will allow you to use that creature as an attack...As you fight and absorb more of that specific Folk, you power up the attack/defense of that creature's specific ability...The creatures are a crapload of awesome, to boot...Like a giant Wyvern-type thing that pops up and blows a big gust of wind, or a giant hairy Yeti thing called a Bug-a-boo that tries to mime a sea urchin...Fun, fun fun! :tpg:

BOOBRIE!! Yeah I also picked this one up (eventually found a used copy at Gamestop for pretty cheap) and I have played it just about as long as you Bill. My wife is playing Ellen's story and I am playing the guys story. The game is really intriguing, and I agree, the battle mechanics are a ton of fun. As you progress it seems like you need to use certain folk to defeat other folk which gives that battle mechanic a bit more depth. The boss battles are cool and necessitate the use of particular folk at particular times. Hopefully none the gameplay wears thin because so far I love this game.

Huh, the demo for this didn't excite me at all.  In the span of five minutes I felt the combat was too repetitive and I hated the "yank your Six-axis" to get the "souls" or whatever they were.  Perfect case of shoehorned in six axis features that suck ass.  God I hate the Six-Axis.

Does the game get significantly different (i.e. better) as you continue to play or is just not for me?

As I mentioned, you start to get different attacks (you are absolutely flooded in the first hour...I have around a dozen different attack creatures), and as Mr. Jack mentioned you have to figure out which Folks are best to use against others, which adds a nice strategic element to the game...

But if you don't like ARPGs in general I can't imagine you liking this one...

    Small battle clip...
