The "Mm hmm" made me laugh. I'm pretty sure that he's setting up for a future "tournament mode" update.

Very nice to see this feature.  It was always a pain with more than 4 ppl in SSBM to keep changing out names.  So much so that we just didn't bother selecting them.  Now that names hold your controller setting along side your records, this feature is nearly a necessity.

To bad I'm no longer likely to have 4+ friends playing at any one time

I'm going to hate dragging my Wavebird to other people's houses for tourneys.  It seems like everyone else I know got rid of all their GC controllers.  Still, good update!

I actually like this update.  It's not a new character or a video or anything, but considering some of the updates lately...

Well, it's pretty cool on its own anyway.  On occasions when there are more than four people, it's nice to have some rotation system, better now that it's enforced in the game and allows for names and control schemes.

I guess the Smash Bros. think tank does more than just think up new characters and stages...they care about how we play.

This is very useful since people might have their own way of playing, it's nice to make everyone's customizations easier to deal with.

This'll probably be attached to a tournament mode as well.

It must be too long since people have played Melee because Melee already had this feature under tournament mode called "Winner/Loser Out".

The only addition (and a welcome one at that) is the "I gotta drop one!" option which sends you to the end of the queue.

You know, I hate to say this, I really do, but...

Did anyone catch what he said about that "Group" mode the other day?  That you could only have as many players as the console would accept controllers?  Then he purported that number to be four at the time being?  Something like that, at least?  That struck me as a strange thing to say, since we know you can play with both GC controllers and with Wiimotes, making at least eight controllers a possibility.

Then, today, we get a screen showing the rumble options, and what's on the screen?  Six controllers.  Three cube controllers and three Wiimote combos.  This means that Brawl in particular is able to utilize all eight controllers at the same time, at least in the options screen.

Now, I know I'm drawing conclusions, yes, I admit that, but does anyone get the feeling that we might see more than four players allowed in a match?  Is it possible that six or eight players would be included?  In Melee, we saw one battle with six opponents that weren't wire frames, but we did see more than four, nonetheless.  I get the feeling that, like the character screen, we've been seeing slightly modified screens to make it look like there's only four possible players at a time.  I would not be surprised to see an announcement at some point in time talking about additional players, at least, in local, single-console play.

In fact, considering the game was supposed to be released by now, with a nicely announced Dec. 3rd release date, didn't it seem odd that they pushed the date back?  Would it take that long, you know, three months, to add in a character or two?  I dunno.  Perhaps they wanted to pursue this possibility as well...

Where the rotation option allows you to choose the number of entrants, it clearly says at the bottom of the screen "Select 2, 3, or 4 players per match".

It's a shame, though. 8 player SSB would be the epitome of awesome.

Toggle the proverbial buzz-buzz on your controllers on and off.

Just remember, the Classic Controller doesn’t have rumble, so don’t get too carried away.

You can also set rumble preferences for each logged name.
Sweet. Though it's only useful for Cube controllers..

EDIT: And the Ice Climbers remix is neat. I liked the riff in the middle.

The Wii-Remote has a rumble as well, so it's every controller but Classic that it applies to.

Also, since the music test has Animal Crossing as a category, there's just gotta be an AC character in the planning have a stage and music and all that without a playable character from the franchise would be quite odd.

I meant that you can already turn the rumble off for the remote with the Home menu..

It was a double update. If they were scraping the bottom of the barrel, they wouldn't put two updates out at once. Sakurai wanted to show us the options. I think he's just messing with you.

As for the music, I'm really liking that there's variety between the tracks, as opposed to Melee's "faux-orchestra-and-occasional-metal" soundtrack.

Oh, and I was hoping that clicking on "buzz-buzz" would bring up an Earthbound-related easter egg. Oh well.

The fact that they included a second update pretty much confirms that it was a lousy update.

I hate to be a jerk about this and I know people have different views on things but its annoying how some fans are defending what is esentially a pointless update.

"Oh but the update shows you how flexible the game is!".

Come on, some fans say that as if Brawl is the first game ever to have an options menu.

The ONLY good thing about this  update is that sound test is available from the start, meaning  that there should be better stuff to unlock this time around.

But other than that, its a worthless update. If it wasn't for the fact that Brawl is going to be released next month in Japan I would've suggested that Sakurai should stop updating the blog, at least until he had something to  talk about.

I'd agree, but remember, anything to do with character selections and the like has been altered to use as an early demo version.  Like how the character select screen is not the final starting character select screen, the stage select screen is not the final stage select screen, and the special battle mode screen was missing battle modes.  He easily could have altered this mode.  That's what I'm saying.  That despite the wording there had been altered to hide the fact.  I just don't think these two updates happened so close to each other by chance, I think he might be preparing to reveal something to us.
