If you warp in 1-2 and 4-2 in SMB, World 8 is the 5th stage you play.

Originally posted by: SixthAngel Actually putting something on sale can be a surprise.  And I guarantee many Wii owners were happy and surprised when they found out they could download Mario Bros. today.  If the Wii went on sale early or if Nintendo released a game like Metroid, SSBB, or Wario Ware early everyone would be surprised and call it that.  You just don't want this game so you say this.

"I'd hate to ruin the surprise. Is there activity that we're working on for before the holidays? The answer is yes," said Reggie.

Either this is the poorest phrasing job in the world or SMB isn't the surprise. The reason why it wasn't reviewed by the ESRB is because it was already given a rating when it was released on either the GBA, e-Reader cards, or Animal Crossing, hence why it's appearance was considered a surprise because it came in under the radar.

SMB isn't the surprise. If there is one, this wasn't it.

And please, don't sit there with a straight face and try to tell me that the release of SMB on the VC carries 1/1,000th of the weight that the Wii or any of its highly-anticipated games launching early would carry, mainly because, unlike the Wii and its new games, you can already play SMB in at least 3 other legal mediums.

Again, I have to agree with SB. SMB on the VC store hardly qualifies as a surprise since we all knew it was coming. If it was a game that we NEVER expected to appear on the VC, even if we had to pay for it, that would've been a surprise.

And putting something for sale can only be considered a surprise if the item is really rare and the opportunity to buy it arises all of a sudden. Like for example, you go to a Best buy, they don't have Wiis in stock, then all of a sudden they announce 40 Wiis for sale at half the price.

Now THAT is what I call a surprise...

Oh you hardcore internet gamers... *tsk* *tsk* *tsk*

This was a surprise for all the NON-Internet obsessed gaming-news-obsessed Wii owners out there... a.k.a. 99.99% of the population!

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that all the people that waited at Target, Best Buy, etc for the Wii's launch are NOT non-internet obsessed. Having said that, they are the people that, during the systems first few days, made the system sold out all across the country. I highly doubt only a few people looked into the whole surprise thing. I would say 30-50% of people who own Wii's read gaming news either through magazines, websites, or forums.

Again I say it could have been the Internet or Weather channel, because if I remember correctly both were launched shortly after this "tease" annoncement.

Again, those were expected by the end of the year. I think the weather channel was dated before Reggie made the comment.

In order for something to be a surprise, you must NOT see it coming. It should be completely unexpected.

Again, if the surprise was a VC game we never expect or a brand new Wii channel that was suddenly announced and released free of charge, then it could've been considered a surprise.

Well we had no idea when the Internet Channel was supposed to come out, so its announcement that it would be out before the Holidays could still be considered a surprise. Personally that is what I thought it was going to be. Was it announced, yes. But we weren't even sure it was going to be out before Christmas here in the states.

This is what I meant by most Wii owners will be surprised and then I brought up things that internet obsessed Wii fans would get excited about.  The size of the announcement has nothing to do with whether it is a surprise.  This is a prime example of overhyping.  I'm sure many Wii owners were surprised and excited when  SMB was available on Christams so they could use the Wii points someone gave them.  I can picture a lot of people I know doing just that.

Seriously, I don't care how out of touch with reality you are - if you wern't expecting SMB to show up on the Virtual Console at some point in time, you don't deserve to own a Wii.

Also, as far as the date on the Weather Channel and Opera... Up until I got my Wii home and set it up, I thought these two (and the news channel) were supposed to be included on Day One.  You know, since they were saying how the system would do it and all.  Merry Christmas, here's partial functionalty on your $250 system.  And the option to buy a 20 year old game that you probably already have.

Seriously, I don't think Nintendo "owes" us a Christmas Present.  And I'm not at all unhappy with my $250 purchase.  But those of you who are sitting there acting like Reggie and those at Nintendo are Gods and we're lucky enough that they even considered 'giving' us what they have (and by 'giving', I mean us paying $250+), pull your heads out of your back sides...
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

^^Agreed

Anyone trying to make a 20 year old SMB out to be an acceptable "surprise" is spending too much time of their day covering for Nintendo. SMB, the internet channel, Opera, these are all things that should have been on the console day 1. These are basic features we were promised, so I'm not going to sit up here and congratulate Nintendo for "surprising" us with features that really should have already been there.

Also, don't kid yourself: Reggie knew who was talking to when he made that announcement. If the Reggie wasn't talking to the "internet-obsessed" with that announcement he sure picked the wrong venue. Only two types of people would hear or care about this announcement: gamers who knew about it, and gamers who didn't. Most people who knew about this "surprise" (and aren't lying to themselves) are pretty disappointed, because eventually having SMB on the VC was already a given, and to most long overdue. Same for the gamers who didn't know about this announcement, because in no known universe does a 20 year old game  (even Mario) carry the type of sway that Nintendo still thinks it does.

Non-gamers, in my opinion, don't factor because if they were never gamers and the Wii is their first system I really don't see the VC (full of games they never played and never wanted to play) having any appeal for them at this point in time, period.

Disappointing very disappointing.  They could have just sent me a card celebrating non-denominational Toy Day.

I was thinking that, but like UB said, both of those were promised at some point earlier on.

Though, the early internet beta WAS a bit of a surprise, certainly more than SMB on the VC.

Now, if they suddenly released Chrono Trigger, Earthbound and/or translated Fire Emblem 1-5 on the VC...MEGATOOOOOOOON!

You just described 99% of the internet.

This is a Nintendo forum where Nintendo lovers talk about Nintendo sh*t, "caring" is strictly optional.

Again...

"I'd hate to ruin the surprise. Is there activity that we're working on for before the holidays? The answer is yes," said Reggie.

We still have one holiday left, a universal holiday: New Year's.

But while I'm not holding my breath, I find what Reggie said enigmatic: an "activity we're working on" sure doesn't sound like bringing a game to the VC.

I need to find what the question was...I think VG is right: I'm betting it was bringing the Opera browser out before xmas.

Ok, Pro wins the thread.

I've won Reggie's game once, but I sadly need to win it two more times to meet the needs of current friends...
