Our Christmas gift?
« on: December 22, 2006, 04:00:16 AM »
Read on the front page that Nintendo's big "christmas gift" to us wii owners is the ability to download Super Mario Bros.  As happy as I am too see this, Street Fighter, Super Castlevania etc, does anyone feel a little cheated?  I was expecting maybe a free game, new VC console support, anything other then this.

A free VC game would have been cool. They should have let us download Tetris or SMB for free. Oh well.

I've noted my rage at the official thread.

I'll summarize.

It's a Monday so they were releasing games anyway.
They held back good games that were released in the other regions to make it seem special.
NoA is a Scrooge.

I would have been happy with a Card from the Nintendo Icons on my Message Board.  This ain't special at all.  In fact its very anti-climatic and another example of them jerking us around.  If all of Nintendo did this then it might be something.  But in the connected world we live in to give us leftovers... as something special... blah.

I think one of our gifts is the early release of the working build of the internet browser.

Since when do businesses have to give out free Christmas gifts?  You buy their stuff.  That's the whole point.

When they told you they do something special.  This ain't special.  Maybe a price reduction on all these would make them special though.

I'm not saying they "had" to or anything.  Heck Im not all that worked up over the fact that they didn't.  But when Nintendo (Reggie) announced we would recieve a Christmas gift, I guess I set my hopes up high.  And from the talks about this topic in previous posts, I was not alone.  It was just sort of a let down.  Still though, the moment SF2, and SMB are on my wii I'll forget all about this.

Agreed in full.

With all of the free stuff they could have given us (Miis, cards, etc.) I think it's safe to say this is sucktacular at best.

I wouldn't consider the opportunity to buy something a gift in any situation.  To me that goes against the whole definition of a gift.  You GIVE something, not SELL something.

Though the opportunity to buy something could be a gift if it was a one of kind item that normally wouldn't be for sale like the Mona Lisa or a night with your neighbour's wife.

SB, remember when you decided to tell me the surprise of the package because you feared that I would be hyped up only to be disappointed early on? I think that's what happened to you and EVERYONE expecting the Christmas surprise. Reggie made the mistake of letting everyone know to expect a surprise on Christmas, and lo and behold, everyone got disappointed.

I think I told SB to not expect anything spectacular because companies, especially Nintendo, have the tendency to hype up the most insignificant of things, leading to major disappointment.

Which is why I say that while you bitch at Nintendo hit yourself in the gut for getting your hopes up. And SB, this BETTER teach you to not expect anything great (I am talking about your wishes of an Apple/Nintendo announcement, SB, because IT WON'T HAPPEN).

Not to get anyone's hopes up, but there is still the chance of getting a Christmas message. I mean, didn't Reggie mention something that users that had their Wiis connected on Christmas would be RECEIVING something? VC downloads are hardly receiving because you have to pay in order to get it. So, who knows...Do not get your hopes up, just in case.

HOLD IT!

I do remember Reggie mentioning a surprise, but he NEVER mentioned it being "special".

Anybody know where I can find the original article where Reggie stated the surprise? Again, I have the feeling that people took the comments out of context and thus the disappointment reared its ugly head.

I think everyone should stop bitching for a sec and analyze what he said before coming to conclusions.

Ok.  Lets restate it as a surprise.  The only reason this would be a "surprise" was that NoA is to incompetent to release a monthly schedule like all the other regions have.  Also this becomes less of a "surprise" considering we all knew these were coming because they were already out/announced in other regions.  Whomp 'em or GoldenEye would be a surprise because no other region has those and one is presumingly stuck in legal mire.  The day isn't even a "surprise."  It's a Monday.  Games come every Monday.

Fils-Aime confirmed that Wiis connected to the Internet will automatically download surprise bonus material from Nintendo, but he wouldn't detail what kind of unexpected messages or channels might pop up. "I'd hate to ruin the surprise. Is there activity that we're working on for before the holidays? The answer is yes."
--MTV interview

So.. before the "holidays" they have "activities" planned!

So, this somewhat confirms that the games are not the surprise Reggie mentioned. The key words here are AUTOMATICALLY DOWNLOAD SURPRISE BONUS MATERIAL. You must buy the games in order to download them.

The thing is that the holidays are almost coming to an end, and no word of surprises have sprung up. Looks like we might have to check the Wiis on Christmas or after it to see what the fuss is about and put an end to this mystery.

I'd like to hope that as a Christmas present of sorts, we're getting more than simply an Internet Channel beta version, as well as several previously unconfirmed Virtual Console games (for before the end of the year).

I'm not expecting Nintendo to actually do anything "major" or the sort, but it'd definitely be a nice surprise if they did.  It's somewhat hard, I suppose, to not expect something, though, since Reggie basically confirmed the existence of a Christmas Day surprise.

I don't expect great just non-routine.
As I said come Christmas and I have a card from Nintendo with a cool picture on it.  Maybe another Mii hat.  I was hoping for a little VC game they cooked up.  Though I'm hoping the shopping channel will next year be themed for each season.

In that case, the least we can expect is a message from Nintendo, signed by either Iwata or Reggie.

You know like...

This is why I'm disappointed. The surprise was that we can buy something which we were going to be able to buy anyway? What?

I would have loved a "holiday" card with a photo of Reggie, Iwata, Shiggy and Perrin all together just saying "Happy Holidays" or something. This wouldn't have been that hard to pull off.

Hell, even a card with Reggie wearing a Santa hat or something would have been cool: it would use the Wii's photo channel feature and would have been a neat little hello, maybe the mail could have been a paragraph from Reggie thanking everyone who bought a Wii, "We couldn't have done it without you.", etc.

It's free, it's clever, and it's...SOMETHING.

But meh, I'm not going to be upset if it's nothing. The Wii is good enough that trivial sh*t like this won't make or break my experience with it.

A Mii update would have been spectacular.
