So...Nintendo's "gift" was to keep a major release secret so people would be more likely to buy crap like Altered Beast?
“...there are those who would...say, '...If I could just not have to work everyday...that would be the most wonderful life in the world.' They don't know life. Because what makes life mean something is purpose.  The battle. The struggle.  Even if you don't win it.” - Richard M. Nixon

Well, the idea of a christmas gift is a little judgemental by Nintendo anyway. I mean, not everyone celebrates christmas. If anything, Nintendo should have given this gift on New Year's Day....

Yep, jack squat.

Shame, too, considering it would have been a good demonstration of the Wii's internet connectivity, especially considering they did something similar when Nintendo sent us the notice about the internet and weather channels.

Maybe when new year's rolls around, as it's a more universal holiday, but I ain't holding my breath.

Bitch bitch bitch.... You get the forcast channel, a preview version of the Wiib browser, and some awesome VC titles. And what thanks do you give them? (not you personally, everyone here)

A whole lot a bitching. Nice.

Thanks, Nintendo, for all the memories.

It is kind of funny how demanding we can get from companies. I guess we feel that our system purchase is like a contract--we bought it, now Nintendo has to ensure we get our money's worth.
Thanks for listening.

So we can change are main skin now?  Dude I'll have to check that when I get home.

Also just to be sort of clear I make my opinion loud because I know that Nintendo has to read us every once and a while and it gives them some time to at least now what I'm saying.  I mean the Reggie card thing would only take Reggie 2 minutes.  Overall I think the mindshare would be worth it.

I view most of this as a kind of "you can please some of the people all of the time, but never all of the people all of the time" kinda deal. Yea, a "Reggie Card" thing would have been nice. But, whatever. It's not like Nintendo doesn't think of their customers.

I'm just happy and thankful they keep making games! And to ecco Mario, "Thanks for the memories Nintendo."

No one DEMANDED a surprise: Reggie said there would be one. If the surprise was going to be so insanely weak, why bother advertising it?

If the surprise is that we can now pay them money for a 20+ year old piece of software, then that's limper than Bob Dole without his viagra.

Why say anything if the alleged "surprise" is a game that Japan and Europe have already been able to download since launch?

Do the smart thing: go play it in AC on the GC.

And for those of us who won't bend over and grab out ankles for VC pricing, no, it's not better than nothing.

I'm not sure if it was ever confirmed that this was indeed the surprise, but calling this a "surprise" is akin to telling my GF to expect something awesome for Xmas, then telling her that the surprise is that she can pay me the full price of a piece of jewelry and I'll go to the store to get it for her.

$250.

Not that I'm complaining that I didn't get anything for free or what not, but each of those (the forcast channel, the internet channel and the VC games) were all things that we were supposed to be getting for the purchase price of the Wii in the first place (well, not the VC games, but the option to buy them).
Just some random guy on the internet who has a different opinion of games than you.

Another good point.

Though, I'm not complaining that I didn't get something for free.

My complaint is that I'm supposed to consider the ability to buy something I have no interest in buying as something I should be excited about.

I have to admit at first I think people were bitching too much about it and thought the put too much emphasis on what Reggie, but upon closer inspection of the actual quote and no surprise on Christmas some of it is valid.

I have to agree with SB in that Reggie made the HUGE mistake of promising a surprise, then finding out its something not worth it.

But whatever, I don't have a Wii so I can't join in on the bitching .

Sure you can.

Calling a the act of putting something on sale a "surprise" is idiocy no matter what the circumstance.

But like I said, are we even sure that WAS the surprise?

Actually putting something on sale can be a surprise.  And I guarantee many Wii owners were happy and surprised when they found out they could download Mario Bros. today.  If the Wii went on sale early or if Nintendo released a game like Metroid, SSBB, or Wario Ware early everyone would be surprised and call it that.  You just don't want this game so you say this.

It is really everyones fault for building way too much hype behind every tiny little announcement.  If Reggie said he liked Oscar Meyer Wieners everyone would be on here talking about how the wiener mobile would be in the next Mario Kart the same night.

I actually am upset that they released Super Mario Bros. I actually spent $5 on that game with the hope that they added a saving ability. That game is so ridiculously hard to beat with the lives they give and the fact that you can't save/have check points doesn't help. I have no idea how I got as far as I did back in the day.

MorningStar:  My friend beat the game the first time she played it in years on her first play through.

Seriously, you don't need a save sense the every NES game has that Wii Menu exit save feature.  Just make sure you find and collect every Extra Man you can get in the game...and you will be fine.

Also, remember the warp pipes are your friends.  You can get to world 8 by only playing a total of like 6 Stages.

I'm not playing the game to beat it by using shortcuts- I want to beat it by enjoying the levels it offers. Seriously, I cannot tell you how many times I've played the first goddamn world; it's obnoxious. And the only thing the exit save point feature is good for is if I have to stop playing for whatever reason which isn't the case. Seriously, the game is beatable, but just barely. You cannot even compare the difficulty of New Super Mario Bros to Super Mario Bros., New SMB is a walk in the park compared to it.

A save feature wouldn't hurt whatsoever.

EDIT: took out redundancies

Saving inherently changes game balance. Emulators are PERFECT examples of such. Super Mario Bros. was NEVER meant to be played with saves. Deal.
