I wish there was a chart of just how long Just Dance 2 has been near the top of the UK Charts.

That game has Nintendo like legs and must have sold some sort of record by now.

For those that did not catch this week's GameTrailers Invisible Walls podcast, in a surprising move the host revealed the official NPD Single SKU numbers for November 2010 (something that I'm sure is going to delight NPD since they're going to such lengths to hide these numbers):

Software:

1.  Call of Duty Black Ops (360) - 4, 914, 757 units
2.  Call of Duty Black Ops (PS3) - 3, 093, 879 units
3.  Just Dance 2 (Wii) - 663, 978 units
4.  Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (360) - 718, 179 units
5.  Fable III (360) - 551, 127 units
6.  Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - 430, 470 units
7.  Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (PS3) - 425,293 units
8.  Gran Turismo 5 (PS3) - 399, 257 units
9.  Halo: Reach (360) - 354, 751 units
10.  Wii Fit + w/ Balance Board (Wii) - 353, 085 units

No, the folks at GameTrailers had no idea either why Just Dance 2 was slotted in at the 3rd Best Selling game of the month when it sold less than the "4th" Best Selling Game Assassin's Creed Brotherhood on 360.

Now for the really interesting numbers on Hardware:

GameBoy Advance - 10 units
GameCube - 4 units
Nintendo DS - 1, 508, 176 units
Playstation 2 - 80, 513 units
Playstation 3 - 530, 117 units
Playstation Portable - 288, 587 units
Wii - 1, 270, 192 units
Xbox  - 0 units
Xbox 360 - 1, 373, 646 units

Yeah, we knew some of those numbers already, but not numbers this exact.  Interesting to see both GBA and GameCube still selling...something, while the PS2 is still selling remarkably for its age and the original Xbox is just dead in the water.

Some other fun sales tidbits:

- Goldeneye (Wii) was #62 on the list of Best Selling games for November.  As #41 was the first game on the list to sell less than 100,000 copies, we know Goldeneye sold less than that in its opening sales month.  Yet another decent Wii 3rd party title that failed to sell?  I certainly hope not.

- Metroid Other M is at supposedly around 300,000 copies sold in North America since launch.

Wii & DS set Sales Records in 2010

NINTENDO DS AND WII SET NEW U.S. SALES RECORDS IN 2010
Nintendo DS Becomes All-Time Best-Selling Video Game System; Wii Sells More Than 7 Million for Third Consecutive Year

REDMOND, Wash., Jan. 4, 2011 - The close of 2010 produced two sales milestones for Nintendo in the United States.

According to Nintendo's internal sales figures, the Nintendo DS™ family of portable video game systems has sold more than 47 million in the United States since the original model launched in November 2004. That tally makes Nintendo DS the nation's best-selling video game system of all time.

For the second major milestone of 2010, Nintendo's internal figures show that the Wii™ home console marked its third consecutive calendar year with U.S. sales of more than 7 million - a feat never before accomplished in the history of video games by a home console. To date, the Wii system has sold more than 34 million in the United States alone.

"When we look back at 2010, we see consumers time and again turning to the value and enjoyment of our products," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "When we look ahead to 2011, we see new portable technology and more great Wii games that need to be seen to be believed."

Nintendo is set to release its new Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system in the United States in March. The portable system lets players see 3D content - without the need for special glasses. More details about the system will be announced in the future.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://wii.com. For more information about Nintendo, visit http://www.nintendo.com.

About Nintendo: The worldwide pioneer in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its Wii™ home console and Nintendo DS™ family of portable systems. Since 1983, when it launched the Nintendo Entertainment System™, Nintendo has sold more than 3.5 billion video games and more than 577 million hardware units globally, including the current-generation Wii, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DSi™ and Nintendo DSi XL™, as well as the Game Boy™, Game Boy Advance, Super NES™, Nintendo 64™ and Nintendo GameCube™ systems. It has also created industry icons that have become well-known, household names such as Mario™, Donkey Kong™, Metroid™, Zelda™ and Pokémon™. NPD Estimates for Dec 2010

As great as that is, both systems have a long way to go before they can catch up to the PS2 (if that is even possible). Can it happen? Will it happen?

The DS sold 135.58 million as of September 30, so there is no doubt to me that it will break the PS2's record (the GBA sold over 6 million more systems after the DS came out, so the DS can still sell millions more after 3DS comes out). I think the Wii may do it, assuming Nintendo keep selling it after their next system comes out like Sony did with PS2/PS3.

DS already did in the US (obviously) and should probably pass the PS2 this year worldwide if it hasn't already.

Wii is probably close to the PS2 numbers (it's sold faster than the PS2 since it debuted), but has to make up quite a bit WW and I can't see the Wii having the PS2's looooooooooong tail.

I thought PS2 WW #'s was around 127m-132m and we even debated how many of those were replacement systems since Sony only reports the "Shipped" numbers which (I believe) also included warrantied systems.

Unfortunately there is no independent source for sales numbers worldwide. The only region that is really open about sales numbers is Japan. Even so, DS could still beat any PS2 number.

Wikipedia has the PlayStation 2 at 147.6 million units sold worldwide (there are a couple of sources listed, I didn't check them out). So the DS has about 12 million more to go before it can unquestionably surpass the PS2, and until then, we can speculate if those are actually the "shipped" amount and if replacement systems through warranties counted.

PS2 was insanely popular in regions where piracy went undeterred (affordable gaming), and had a relatively better line-up than what the PS3 offers now.

Piracy is exactly what the PS3 needed to take back the console war from Wii and make those analysts' 2012+ sales erection predictions come true.

Has the Wii even sold 100mil systems world wide yet?  I don't think so. Otherwise, I would bet Nintendo would put out a press release for that.

I think Shaymin was talking about the numbers for North America, not worldwide. What are the sales figures for Wii and PS2 only in North America?

EDIT: The Wii number is in that press release so that's easy enough. Wikipedia has a PS2 figure (again, didn't check source), so:

Wii: 34 million
PS2: 50 million

So even in North America alone, the Wii has a long way to go to pass it up.

Does it really mean jack **** if the Wii or DS outsells the PS2?  What matters is how the system is remembered and how beloved the games are years from now.  I have fonder memories of the N64 than I do for the PS1.  The sales have zero effect on that.  The games define the legacy.

It's all about who gets mentioned for what when it comes to the record/history books.

When people look back 20 years from now to see what was the best selling console ever before the end of the world in 2012, Does Nintendo really want Sony to take the assumed credit of most influential videogame creator because they sold the most of a single system.

It may not seem all that important now, and it probably won't be all that important later, but I'm sure that when you look back, and look forward, Nintendo would love for you to associate their name synonymously with videogames.

pre-post edit: Woooo!! Wii won the battle of 2010. A come from behind victory in the closing months.
DS lost it's battle though. :( I guess you win some and you lose some, but the 3DS is about a month away in Japan, so it's understandable.

I just want the best selling console of all time to be a Nintendo console. When the PS2 is beaten that will happen, because currently the PS2 holds that title. It matters for fan boy reasons....

What matters is how the system is remembered and how beloved the games are years from now.  I have fonder memories of the N64 than I do for the PS1.  The sales have zero effect on that.  The games define the legacy.

Can't we have both?

It is so crazy seeing how much Japan loves Monster Hunter. In a few weeks, it will probably over take New Super Mario Bros. Wii. I think Capcom will be very happy to see Portable 3 get within reaching distance of Pokemon Black & White. I'd be flabbergasted if Portable 3 ever manages to beat Black & White.

PS2 was insanely popular in regions where piracy went undeterred (affordable gaming), and had a relatively better line-up than what the PS3 offers now.

Same goes for the DS.

It's just kinda annoying when everybody points at the PS2 as the best selling game system ever when the numbers are most likely inflated.

But Nintendo didn't ship as many DS units yet.

See what I did there.

When Sony ripped the Emotion chip out of the PS3 I bet that gave some sort of boost to PS2 sales. Although really, for as powerful as the PS3 is (or supposed to be) you'd think Sony could find a way to handle the dinosaur PS2 through software emulation. After all, that is what Microsoft was able to do with many original xbox games on the 360.

I think they would rather not work out software emulation because they get more licensing money from PS3 games.
Seeing the God of War and Sly collections, I'm betting that they will just resell PS2 games for the PS3 on discs or PSN. I wouldn't mind that since I never had a PS2.
