Don't forget that inorder for everyone to enjoy NSMB they probably already had their DS and therefore their own copy of the game too.
Not everyone is going to buy their own Wii and hook it up to their own TV and then buy a copy of SMG. There will most likely only be one Wii in the household and there fore only one copy of SMG vs every child and an adult having their own DS and their own copy of NSMB.

Man, that game dropped like a rock. Next week its going to be off the charts completely.

It's a shame, because I remember it being in development from way back in 2005 or even earlier....

It's too late for the Wii to flop in Japan, it's already a success.  Even if it sells just modestly from here on out, it'll continue to outpace the PS3 (the X360 isn't even worth mentioning there).  However, what I see is the Japanese market becoming more and more irrelevant compared to the U.S. and European markets.  Hence, many game companies (such as Square) have made no secret about catering specifically to and expanding those markets.  The Japanese sales charts lately have been totally lackluster.

Actually it's more that the Japanese don't seem to care about home consoles anymore, it's all about handhelds now.  Because the DS has been a beast in terms of hardware and software which shows that the Japanese still care about gaming, but they prefer it in handheld form rather then playing it on a TV.

It might have to do with how Japanese society always seems to be on the move, that they just don't have time sit down and play games for several hours, and so with the DS they're able to play videogames on the go for shorter periods of time.

More news on the "WII IS D00M3D!!!" front...leaked Famitsu numbers suggest that Super Mario Galaxy didn't push the system back up to previous levels - just another week at 40,000.  And the game itself only sold 250,000 copies.

Of course, 40,000 is still more than twice what the other two consoles are selling, and 250,000 copies is still three times what the second-place game, Ace Combat 6, got.
That's my opinion, not yours.

first day sales were 130k
first week sales are 250k

check the DS sales thread for this weeks #'s according to Famitsu
there is a shocking outcome in the Hardware #'s
Its a first, but is it the last time it will happen?

I guess no one ever pays any attention to the DS sales thread, Famitsu is always posted in there and Famitsu usually arrives about 1-2 days before the MC #'s do. Software and Hardware.

While Mario Galaxy will still sell much more than other traditional/hardcore games in the Japanese market, it's in real danger of not breaking a million at this pace, perhaps the final indicator of shifting Japanese gaming tastes,  a market where FF:Crisis Core and The Legend of Zelda: TP have failed to break the million mark. The question is whether this is a permanent change or simply a function of transition/console uncertainty, because if it's the latter, an increased userbase can make up for it, if the former, then the Japanese market may stay shrunken for these types of games for the foreseeable future.

According to VGChartz, the Wii version of GH2 came in second place (to 360), that's pretty big. XBox 360 has the advantage that it was the only "next-gen" version to be sold either with the guitar, or alone. Wii selling more than the PS2 version is pretty huge.

According to IGN, NPD totals put USA lifetime numbers for the 3 next gen consoles by the end of September 2007 at:

Quote

360: 7,022,900
Wii: 4,955,400
PS3: 2,105,500

That's only a 2 million unit gap! The Wii is definitely within striking distance of the XBox 360, and will hopefully surpass it's american installed base next year.

Nah. The IGN numbers show that the Wii was only able to pull ahead of the 360 in the US market by about 1.2 million over 9 months. With the increasing solidifying of the XBox 360's base and future price drops, even the Wii's explosive success and increased manufacturing capacity will be hard pressed to pull that far ahead, and certainly not over just another 3 or 5 months.

I'm not laughing. I'm quaking in fear at the though of MS success.

I really think we're going to see a SNES versus Genesis sort of battle this gen between the Wii and XBox360, but with less cross-ports and more market segmentation. It's a good thing that Nintendo's Wii is selling strong in ALL markets, because the increasing console irrelevance of the Japanese Market could weaken any company that relies on it (in this case, Sony) and strength any company that traditionally isn't strong there *coughMicrosoftcough*.

That would be hilarious if Xbox 360 ends up beating PS3 in the end. I know it won't happen but it would be funny.

Well, it could happen. The 360 is insanely popular everywhere else, and the PS3 is insanely unpopular everywhere else.

MS just needs to focus a LOT more resources into RPGs and non-games.  I'm not saying they will do it, but they could do it. They certainly have the money to do it.
