School started in Japan. This is traditionally a very slow sales period year after year, I'm led to believe, though I haven't seen numbers from past years myself.

Really?  It's been my understanding that the return from summer break isn't as important there as in the U.S..  More like an extra long seasonal holiday.

It isn't even the beginning of a new school year.

Mid-terms are generally this month in Japan, but I doubt that has any real effect on sales...

Old VGChartz sales estimates seem to bear the theory out. For example, their estimates for the Japanese hardware sales of the week ending August 4, 2002 puts the PS2 at about 81k sales. Then it goes on a decline through September, going as low as 33k in the week ending November 17. By the week ending December 8, 2002, it's rebounded back to 84k.

Well, it seems Salesbot only posted this in the DS thread, but it should probably spur more conversation here:

"Super Mario Galaxy ~ 130k (First Day Sales)

http://ameblo.jp/sinobi/ "

Am I the only one who is pretty disappointed by that? I was hoping that Galaxy would light the charts a blaze after the performance of New Super Mario Bros...

To be fair, it's not bad at all, but it's not what I was hoping for, which was a rebound in the Wii system sales in Japan which I don't see happening anymore this year.

Those were retailer pre-orders. And yeah, the numbers are a bit disappointing, but it is 3D Mario after all - the Japanese have always liked the 2D versions better. Even Mario 64 didn't do too well over there.

Those numbers are to be expected I guess. Sunshine didn't break a million in Japan, so I'm hoping that Galaxy has a shot at it.

Well it's only the first day sales. If the game has legs in Japan and it keeps selling at a steady pace then that's just as good no? =)

I hope so... the fact that it had less sales on the first day compared to Hot Shots Golf 5 on the PS3 is very disheartening to me.

My guess is that mostly only the casuals have their hands on Wiis and alot of the Nintendo HARDCORE have been waiting for SMG to release before picking up a Wii. Problem is that their is only so many Wiis to be found in the stores which prevented alot of future SMG owners from buying  the game.

Besides, I hear the advertising wasn't all that great as it seemed Nintendo thought that the name alone would sell the game. I guess not...(on the first day atleast.)

But it isn't like the Wii has been tearing up the charts in Japan. Last week they only sold 35,000 which is better than the other consoles, but far less than the handhelds and much less than the PS2 was in its heyday. So it really shouldn't be hard to get a hold of.

From what I've been hearing, Nintendo has been diverting systems from Japan over  to the N.A. and EURO shores cause they were anticipating a slow-down period (and the stack of left-over Wiis on shelves helped make that decision), so its not like they have been flooding the channel with Wiis. Its more like they are either diverting some stock or they have been stock-piling and the flood gates are about to open.

I wouldn't be surprised if Wii sales were around 60-80k for this upcoming week.

To be honest, I think the Wii is going to be a flop in Japan. It keeps dropping each and every day and many hit titles are dropping like flies in just the first weeks.

Its just so weird! The Wii survived Halo 3 mania and sold many consoles without a major title out yet in Japan people give a sh*t about it.

The way I see it if Wii Fit doesn't move consoles then forget it, the Wii is history in Japan.

To expect the same sales as NSMB is kind of ridiculous because of how many more DS's were sold at the time.  I expect SMG to have a good constant sale rate, it seems to be a habit with a lot of Nintendo games recently.

Yeah,  Nintendo games have great legs in Japan.  Everyone has to remember that the majority of NSMB sales came from the months after it's launch, where it averaged about 20,000 - 30,000 every week.  Even though it easily sold over 1 million in it's first month, the other 3.5 million copies came from the next year's worth of sales.

Even the article says the 130,000 it's first day is better then Mario Party 8 first day sales.  The last time I checked Mario Party 8 had sold over 800,000 copies in Japan.  So if Galaxy is already off to a better start then Party was, I'd imagine it should be able to sell around the same amount if not more.

Oh it should also be stated that Super Paper Mario sold over 400,000 copies in Japan, and since the Mario RPG's are less popular then the main Platforming one, Galaxy will do a lot better then that.  Hell even Twilight Princess was able to pass the 500,000 mark in Japan and we all know that Mario is more popular then Zelda over there so Galaxy will at the very least be over 600,000.
