I never have liked that idea.  I want to see Mega Man using powers he's famous for, not shooting Link's light arrows or whatever the heck he'd get out of Jigglypuff or Captain Falcon.  I'd like him to be loaded up with several classic weapons that he can cycle through quickly with down+b and fire (maybe with a charge up) with b.

Did you freak out when Mario learned how to throw a punch in Super Mario 64?  What about the Ice Climbers?  Their original move set was even simpler than Mario's.  Besides, this sort of pedantry in general has no place in a game that lets Donkey Kong pick up a Super Scope and shoot a ReDead, then get a flower planted in his skull by a Pokemon summoned by Samus.  Compared to that, Sonic learning Kung Fu is almost banal.

Well actually if you want to know the truth yeah.  Because I realized that this was what was replacing my Flower Power.  Though your comparing an in canon game to a non-canon game.  Sort of apple and oranges.  To make a long story short.  If I see Samus sucking up an Enemy and assuming their powers I worry.  If I saw link drop his sword and shield then bust out some wicket Jet Lee style kung fu.  I worry.  It be very out of character.  Bowser using a Rapier. etc.  All as the default not items.  Level items don't define the core character direction.  Things that are out of character would hurt the perception your really are playing that character.

That'd be fine too.

I'm just tossing out ideas, really.

Well, first of all, it's hard to feel like I'm playing Samus when Shyguys start flying around, so I deny most any criticim based on "faithfulness" to the characters.  It's about paying homage to the characters and the games they appeared in, not recreating those games.  If it's okay for Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Samus, and many others, including Link, to punch and kick in addition to all the moves they're famous for and even a few more, then I don't have a problem with Sonic doing so if he winds up joining in, which he might not in the end.

I really hope you can see a difference between allowing Sonic to use the hands he's always had and giving Bowser a sword.

I'd have more to say on the subject but I've never really played any Mega Man games.

As for Sonic, he obviously has strong legs so most of his attacks should be foot-based, but yeah, characters use their hands and feet in these games all the time in manners which they never do in their games.

Why would there be anything wrong with Link kicking someone just because he doesn't do it in his games or Samus punching?

And lest we forget that Link's downward stab move was taken from the ORIGINAL SSB and found its way into both Soul Caliber 2 AND Twilight Princess so it's apparently a two way street.

The downward stab is from The Adventure of Link.

The downward stab is from The Adventure of Link.

You mean Zelda 2, the infamous NES Zelda?

And all this time I thought the move was generated in SSB...

Maybe the reason S_B belived that the stab was from SSB was because no other game used it after the Adventure of Link. I certainly don't remember the movie on OoT, Majora's mask, Link's awakening and such.

What's interesting is that the downward stab was used in Wind Waker as well. However, you could only use it by parrying certain enemies (I think Floormasters and some other enemy)

That WAS the rumor. There is NO truth to it.

Seriously, Miyamoto just announced on the radio show SGF in Japan that he was defecting to Sony. True? False?

Just because they mentioned Sakurai's name doesn't mean there is even a hint of truth to it:

On the part about new characters being shown, the way it sounds to me is it'll just be the returning ones like Fox, Donkey Kong, Yoshi etc.  Since those characters weren't shown in the E3 trailer they would technically be new characters since we haven't seen what they'd be like in the game yet.

Of course if we do see a completly new character, it's going to be Sonic.  I remember Miyamoto saying in an interview that Sonic was the most requested character and you know the impact that showing Sonic would have.  Plus what better way to create huge hype for the Wii before launch then telling people that Sonic WILL be in the next Smash Bros.
I’m gonna have you play every inch of this game! - Masahiro Sakurai

Well, not to make this a "What Game Characters Should Be In Brawl" discussion, but I always thought Earthworm Jimwould make a great Smash Brothers character.  Unfortunately, the Jim character doesn't exactly have a strong(or popular for that matter) series to fall back apon, so I guess it's still just a wish.

Cycling through weapons in Smash Bros? Not sure I like that idea.

Should just whip out a random weapon each time, like Peach's turnips or Peach's side smash.

Seriously though, I can't even imagine any characters to add to the roster.
