Rumor has it that now since Microsoft and Nintendo have crossplay for Minecraft the Goldeneye project is back on. Microsoft had pretty much fully developed an enhanced port of Goldeneye for xbox 360, but never released it because Nintendo, Activision, and Microsoft couldn't get on the same page. I believe MS and activision were on board but Nintendo wasn't.

We probably didn't see it at e3 because they wanted to take the time to make it will look like a next gen game.

I thought it was actually MGM that ruined everyones fun. Reggie had said he would love to see this on Nintendo systems too, but "other players with a stake in the game" had to be considered".

And guess who owns the Bond franchise now?

Sony has been more closed recently about licenses. Actually, it could get quite tricky on who owns Bond. Eon owns the Bond film rights and licenses it out to MGM for movies. MGM was owned by Sony, but that isn't the case anymore. Some complex bankruptcy stuff happened.

So, to get more complicated. James Bond is a book series. As such the company IFP can license out Bond to video games based off of the books instead of the movies. Think the Hobbit for Gamecube. MGM made the majority of the movies where we would get out derivative content. And also now owns the movies they didn't make.

according to Eon's wikipedia page.

"The video rights for all of Eon's films are owned by MGM Home Entertainment, and are controlled by MGM's distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment initially assumed the video rights to Casino Royale, but the 2012 home video editions of this film were issued by MGM and 20th Century Fox."

according to the New York Times Sony's rights to the movie expired in 2015.

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/20/business/media/james-bond-sony-mgm-eon-productions.html

As of April several companies have been courting MGM, but I can't find any news since that time.

If I were to guess whose going to buy bond? Disney. If I were MGM I would think I would probably make the most money off of Disney. After the initial rights sell off I would Imagine I still retain a cut of the later profits. The company to make the most profits is going to be Disney. Also, Disney would be smart enough to plan their films so they don't compete.

Otherwise it's going to be Star Wars vs Bond at the box office. Or Avengers vs Bond.

I wonder if they could remake Goldeneye by keeping the level layouts and objectives the same but changing the characters and story as needed to make it a port without the James Bond licence.  Back in the day the devs of Wonder Boy wanted to port that game to the NES but Sega owned the rights to the Wonder Boy character.  So to get around it the devs made Adventure Island which is literally the same game but with different characters.  A later Wonder Boy title got ported to the TG16 as the Dynastic Hero using the same workaround.

So if Rare owns the rights to the gameplay and level design of Goldeneye could they release a modern remake of it with generic characters?  Maybe refashion it into a Perfect Dark game?  Though MS (probably rightly) may assume that without the Goldeneye name the game won't attract enough attention.  It may be difficult to let fans know that this is actually Goldeneye *wink* *wink*.

The bummer is that the soul would be sucked right out of it. When I noticed in the above vid that the enemy faces were changed and Dr Doak was changed to Dr Rakhmanov, it felt kinda funny in my gut. Would I still pay top dolla for it? I think so. Maybe?

There are some multiplayer Goldeneye levels in Perfect Dark. I wouldn't mind a British spy game with original characters and missions. They could get real weird with them.

RE4 portable (not the mobile ****) would be great. I already bought it for GameCube, Wii and PS4...what's another copy?

I just recently bought the majority of the re series on ps4. My only problem with the ps4 version  is the controls. The best version  for controls for me is still the Gamecube version.

Probably $40 with the Switch tax. I'd gladly pay that for one of the best games ever made.

I'm kind of amazed SFII sold 450,000 units myself. How is the Switch becoming such a software sales beast? Is it the small selection still facing the millions of owners at the moment?

Yeah that's over a 10% attach rate for USFII, pretty great for a 3rd party game...especially one that's 25 years old.

It's because it's the hybrid system people have dreamed about Nitnendo making for years, combined with an incredible strong first party lineup.  Nintendo is selling to a large portion of the general gaming public which want Zelda and Mario Kart, but the hybrid nature makes it very tempting to pick up a lot of other titles as well.  Street Fight 2 is an iconic game and I imagine having the ability to play it on the go but still able to play on the big screen with friends is very tempting especially to older nostagic gamers which Nintendo systems usually do pretty well with.

This is why I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of major third party titles do better then expected since the hybrid nature of the Switch brings a whole new element to the system, especially to older gamers who don't have the time anymore to spend hours just sitting in front of the TV because of family and work, but still want that option when they do have time.

The cynic in me thinks it's more a vacuum of compelling first party titles outside of Zelda and familiarity with Street Fighter 2 as a brand name.

Granted, that comes from someone who reluctantly bought Mariokart 8 Deluxe, was disappointed a bit with Arms, and can't justify buying Splatoon 2 when I ended up putting the original down and never picking it back up after a few weeks of playing.

Bomberman R got surprisingly good numbers too, if I'm not mistaken.

I don't think it's cynical to say that SFII was a genre Nintendo wasn't covering at launch and is a brand name.  Those are just clean facts.  Same with Bomberman R.

No, but it is cynical to conclude that SF2, or any other game for that matter, sold well for lack of other compelling games. While I even think that could be partially true for the launch window releases, it's just such a tired argument that has been played to death by Switch skeptics. Every title that has had strong sells on the Switch can't be because there aren't any other games--there's too many games selling well for that argument to not sound ridiculous! It's time to give in and admit that Nintendo, for now at least, has a very successful new platform with a very bright future for at least the next couple of years.
