Madden Revolution - Brand New Game

Wow, they seem to actually going all out. I guess they realised that if it's just the same as the PS3 and 360 versions with worse graphics, nobody is going to bother with it. I'm not an NFL fan, not living in America after all, but this could do some big sales in the US if its pulled off well and word gets around.

This also explains why EA employees at LA and elsewhere haven't been too in-the-know considering the Revolution.

It's great that they have a whole other studio for Rev games, i'm really hoping they do this with Fifa as well, for the other half of the world.

The question on my mind is: Is this studio almost entirely focused on adapting revolution controls for EA ports, or will they optimize code for the Rev hardware as well?

Also, is this slow-release deliberate and will it be sustained through to E3? If so, I'm going to have a long line of sleepness nights coming up, eagerly eawaiting the next tiny news bit.

It amazes me how much EA is willing to bend over backwards for Nintendo. "New controller? Okay boss, we'll open up a dev team just for your system!"

As far as the game goes, I think it illustrates everything that is exciting and scary about Nintendo's new system. On the one hand, the rev opens up exciting new gameplay possibilities, and on the other, it's clear we won't be getting much in the way of direct ports. As for Madden specifically, it sounds like it utilizes a gestures-to-replace-button-presses system....which could be a lot of fun, or could be really sparkling innovationy.

good point. I haven't bought a Madden game in forever, but I'll probably need to get this.

this is huge

even if its not new IP

this will attract a diverse segment of the market.

(former Madden players who been bored with the series the last few years, new gamers who see it being palyed at a demo kiosk or a party, Madden lovers who usually only look for graphical upgrades but are just too curious about it not to TRY it...)

Absolutely.  I think this is the biggest game Nintendo could hope to come to the Revolution.  By a WIDE margin.

I suppose EA was worried about a scenario: Imagine what if the Rev became big, a serious contender in the market. Where all the money is. Imagine EA just gave the system a bad port of their sports lineup. Konami sees an opening and makes a game for the Rev that really utilizes the system, looking better than EA's offerings and using the Rod properly. Konami would be able to take an even larger segment away from EA, becoming the household name for both football and american football. that'd be devastating. EA can't allow such a threat to arise so they have to make sure to grab the Rev's market entirely. Since ideas are cheap but art isn't a competitor would be capable of producing games much cheaper on the Rev and gain much greater profits than EA does on the other platforms.

I think you guys are reading a little to far into this.  I'm sure that EA's Madden division was already subdivided into teams for each platform.  With the controller and like it's becoming the cool new hip thing to be dedicated to it.  So spinning off a division wouldn't be that hard.  It just probably came to the point where the Nintendo team was holding back the others and vice versa they were getting to different so in the end it makes better sense to split them off and share license and general ideas.

Edit:  I finished reading the article.  It sounds nice that EA is trying to actually change there image some it looks like.  They have tried before, Cube GBA connectivity support for Madden (I heard it was good).  But they have been mired into a port company as much as Nintendo has been mired into the Kidty  image.  It may not be true but no one thinks there version of an EA is the right version, PC gamers excluded.  This is a Golden opportunity for good justification to make some real changes at EA for the better that has probably been needed to be done.  I may actually be looking forward to this.  Though I'm going to have to see some footage and like.

NEW INFO here (from gamasutra)

Some notable quotes:

Quote

We're not spending our time saying, okay, let me make it comfortable for you, for the person who has played previous Madden games. We're saying, hey, you just bought the Revolution. It has a unique controller, and this game is unique. This is proof of why you bought the Revolution.

Quote

We're making sure that when you gesture with your hand, it recognizes it appropriately. That's not trivial. We did focus group testing, and found that people had twenty different ways of throwing. We're making sure to capture all those, and whatever way you throw, hopefully, you'll be pleasantly surprised to see that it recognizes it.

Quote

When asked about whether the existing Madden audience will play the game on the Revolution, Schappert suggested: "I think it's going to be different to existing Madden consumers. Football gamers know what to expect, they won't be disappointed with the core mechanics like the AI, but I think the control scheme and the gameplay is different, which is exactly what I think every Revolution title I want to play is going to be like. The system is different and unique, so I want to play unique offerings on it."

Not so...

We've created a separate group that we have in Canada here that's doing Madden and some other titles and they're just focused on Revolution . Their whole mantra is to create Revolution-specific versions of these games that are created just for the Revolution.

That doesn't seem haphazard or accidental. Its actually a deliberate statement of intent. The studio is making OTHER games as well so its, apparently, not just an Madden-team offshoot.

This is the most promising news: A dedicated team working only on Rev games and adaptations.

YAY!
EA really surprised me with this. First they say it's difficult to develop for the Rev because of it's lack of HD. Then they let us in on the fact that they've dedicated an entire development team just for the Revolution. Even all this team does is "supe" up what would be a port on a GC2, it still has far reaching implications. the 2006 Madden Challenge. Why play on anything except a Revolution? whether you think they're generic or not sports titles are huge sellers, and now Revolution will have the best sports titles.

The last time I payed full price for a Madden game was launch of GC, EA has figured out a way to get me to do it again without lack of launch titles.

Just remember, not every EA teams talks to each other before making statements. The "lack of HD" comment was by an X360 team who probably has never been to Canada or certainly does not talk to the teams in Canada.  LOTR for X360 man is not excited about Rev, this dedicated team is excited.

The Gamespot article strongly hinted EA's titles for the Rev would take advantage of WiFi connection.

I'd definitely expect Madden to be online.
