I find this controller very unappealing.  There are key flaws in the original Playstation controller design and these STILL aren't being fixed.  I guess when you have two insanely successful consoles back-to-back you don't fix what 90% of the gaming population doesn't think is broken.

I personally can't stand the Dualshock in general but in particular I hate the way the d-pad is split.  Why haven't they fixed that yet?  From day-one third party Playstation controllers offered "improved" d-pads.  No one likes it so FIX IT.  I don't like having shapes for button names either but at least with that they can justify keeping it for backwards compatibility.

But instead Sony has taken a horrible controller and made it worse.  I don't even see what their plan is.  Nintendo's controller design is the most oddball thing I've ever seen but it fits their strategy.  They have a plan and if you follow that logic the controller makes sense.  But with Sony it's like they're just doing weird ass sh!t because they think they can.

MS is the only console maker whose controller seems to be designed while not high.  They're just taking what worked before and are tweaking it a little.  They're also the only console maker who seems to want to just make a better console instead of changing console gaming forever (Nintendo) or getting as far away from gaming as they can (Sony).  I wouldn't be surprised if the Xbox 360 ended up winning this next gen as Microsoft seems to have the most down-to-Earth logical low-risk plan of the bunch.

You know its amazing, everytime I turn around I here something about the PS3 and just think that history will repeat itself. Just like Nintendo thought it could do no wrong, here comes Sony and its PS3. I mean who knows what will really happen in the end, but it just seems like I read more bad things about Sony's next gen system lately then Nintendo's for a change.

As for the bananarang, I like its futuristic look. Looks like a it came out of a space ship, but for a gaming controller it looks to over the top for me. And though I don't judge befor I hold, I can't help but wonder how my fingers will feel on the shoulders of that thing.

Microsoft's controller this gen is the the only appealing aspect I see in the 360.  It's very comfortable, light, and functional.  I still think the GC pad is the most comfortable, but I  know a lot of people disagree with me on that =p

"They're just taking what worked before and are tweaking it a little. They're also the only console maker who seems to want to just make a better console instead of changing console gaming forever (Nintendo) or getting as far away from gaming as they can (Sony)."

The problem is that the improvement is negligible. Xbox 360 is not the next generation, it's this generation part 2. That's never happened before... when looking at successive systems, it's always immediately apparent what the improvements are. Xbox 360 is just a repackaged Xbox. I mean what's the biggest thing Microsoft has emphasized? It works on nicer TVs. The improvement isn't even something the console can take credit for. It just takes advantage of progress in TVs sold by other companies.

I wholeheartedly agree with Paladin; I feel like High Def. just makes games look more like games. yes you can see higher res. textures but I can still tell I'm playing a videogame and I fear what some crappy rushed 3rd party titles are going to look like when they don't spend the extra effort on textures..
Plus, I dont know many people who want to drop $500 to get a basic gaming setup (over $600 after final controller purchases and a few games... jeez!) If nintendo should get the Rev. out in a decent timeframe and launch at $200-250, Nintendo can't be stopped unless ignorance prevails (again).
However, this is just the launch period; perhaps the 360 will really hit it's stride mid-next year. Until then I think if anyone wants a new video game system they should buy a nintendo DS.
I'll shut up now...

I don't know about you but the DreamCast's graphics were pretty damn impressive when it came out. I played Powerstone and was just in shock that the characters didn't look blocky.

I've been saying for a while that Sony is headed for a fall, the whole no central online, horrible controller, overly expensive console sold at a loss, rumors of weak dev support and launch lineup, a year late in NA, amazingly weak software sales in Handheld market, coupled with increasing overall corporate losses, and lets not forget the huge DRM fiasco and lawsuits.

Yup Its looking more and more like MS will take NA and maybe europe, and if ninty plays its cards right they might grab Japan.

If the PS is out of the picture then ninty will definately get japan, from what I have heard the Xbox is doing extremely poorly in japan, Nintendo would have to really **** up badly to lose japan to MS

I have yet to read a developer with something positive to say about Sony's controller; Nintendo is making them look bad in the collective eyes of the industry.

Amen!  I thought the Dreamcast blew away the N64 and the PSX.  Even comparing Xbox 360 to Dreamcast, I don't see as much improvement as Dreamcast to N64.  (That's just my perception, the improvement may be even greater than Dreamcast if you go by the numbers, but it doesn't look better to me.)

Is Sony headed for a fall?  Too early to say, IMO.  I need to see pricing, playable games, and most of all, third party support before I decide.  If Sony leads in third party support like it did the last two generations, it will probably win again.

The controller...I think Sony just wanted to try and make a cooler looking dual shock.  The public reaction seems negative, but that could turn around.  I agree that it looks uncomfortable, and I don't like how they've left a lot of the same problems in there, but if it turns out to be more comfortable than it looks then Sony gamers won't care that it has the same problems as the old controller.

Edit: changed last sentence to Sony gamers instead of just gamers.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Oh, I wasn't trashing the DreamCast, btw. Just saying that in general a lot of people thought it wasn't 'Next-gen enough' because of the release time. The graphics were definetly that time's next-gen, though.

SO...is the boomerang the final controller.  Last I checked, there was no finalized controller shown at CES.  Is the REV remote about to get ripped off?

Should we care if Nintendo wins in Japan? Id rather have Nintendo win in the US. Makes it easier to buy games and games more geared to our market. Nintendo smashed Xbox in Japan. But its funny how most new games came out on PS2 and Xbox. I wonder why that is. If we want better third party support, nintendo needs to concentrate its efforts here. Not that they should neglect Japan, but they will always do better than microsoft because of the inherent bias they have for microsoft. Maybe cause its an american company. who knows.

Most of the games I bought this gen were made in Japan. I really don't care about most western made games for some reason, maybe because too many of them are either cash-ins on a fad (e.g. WW2), generic realism shooters (with realism I mean graphics style) or racing/sports games.

I too dislike games attempting to be realistic...well, maybe dislike is too strong a word.  I can appreciate some games for what they are, but like you, I prefer a little unreality...and that seems to not be the goal of most Western developers.  Some of them must think realism = fun, or slightly cartoony = for kids.  Sheesh.

I've played next to no WWII games, and I'm already very sick of them.

"Should we care if Nintendo wins in Japan? Id rather have Nintendo win in the US. Makes it easier to buy games and games more geared to our market."

KDR hit it on the head.  I only care about Nintendo's market share in how it relates to more games I like being available on a Nintendo console.  I really don't care about American third parties at ALL.  American games by and large suck nuts unless a Japanese publisher is footing the bill (like Nintendo).  I find that even average Japanese games still crush most American titles.  It's too bad because back in the early 90s American PC devs were making amazing stuff.  The American market is too commercial and nothing proves that more than EA (who is incapable of making games with any artistic merit) being number one.

So all I care about is Nintendo attracting more Japanese support from the Japanese third parties I like (so Koei support doesn't mean squat to me).  Whatever market situation allows that is what I support.  Though Nintendo has to do well enough in North America for those games to actually get localized.
