Well, Nintendo's cirteria for being compatable are very strict.  A router only get 100% if it can be connected right out of the box with no setup.  So, every time an option in the router has to be changed, it gets marked down.  A router's susseptibility to interference is accouted for too.  Your router will work just fine, Nintendo is just telling you that you may need to change a few options.  What else can you do?  Your on a Mac?  Well the Apple Airport is 100% compatable.

Thanks for clearing that up Switchblade Cross. I'll try and mess around with it when I first get Mario Kart and see if I can get a decent connection going with my current set up. If that doesn't work, it may be time to buy Airport.

Haha, that's incredibly weak. Is there some kind of permanent win / loss record that they dont want to mess with or something?

That happens with most online gaming.

That doesn't screw up the game, does it? Does the race go on without them?

Hey when there's about ten billion people online when Mario Kart is finally out for the public, is it still going to say everyone on the "now online" list? The page could get prretty long.

I got an e-mail back from Nintendo. Their recommendation was just to test my current wireless router, because it may work fine for the gaming. Now the only question is do I buy a USB adaptor for when I'm not at my apartment (i.e. when I'm at my parents' house).

You know, I've just realised how incredibly cool it is that Nintendo has actually taken different routers and tested and reviewed them for us. Especially when they're selling their own solution (the usb adaptor). Nintendo is awesome.

If you have problems connecting at home Nintendo wants to make sure you know it's not their fault.  They just don't want you to think poorly about them when it's not their fault.

I'm pretty sure that Nintendo's way of testing different routers and such was by having us do it for them a few months back.  That was during the time when they were giving people access to the Animal Crossing clock.

I use the DI-624 router from D-Link, which has a five star rating on Nintedno's WI-FI site and I can't complain with its performance (a lot better than my old Linksys one). Amazon has it for $60, not sure if that is in your price range:

Well, I usually like Linksys and Netgear's stuff.  I dont have my WiFi set up now, but I have an old Netgear MR814v1 stuffed away somewhere.  The MR814v3 got only one star, and other netgear stuff dident do so well.  I say look for D-Link and LInksys routers, they faired will on Nitnendo's tests.

Linksys WRT54g  802.11g  $48.99 and Nintendo gave it 5/5
D-Link DI-524 802.11g  $29.99 new, $21.99 used.  Nintendo gave it 5/5

Keep shopping around.  YOu have some time.  Keep in mind that the Nintendo WFC USB Adapter will ONLY connect DS and Revolution.  You will not be able to connect laptops and PDAs and stuff.  Spend that extra $5 and give your self that option...

Caterkiller:  It's only available online until March '06 when it will be released in retail with Metroid Prime: Hunters.

That is assuming you live in the US...if you live in Canada then it should be at select retail outlets.

Thanks for the help guys.  Can anyone tell me, what's the difference between the 524 and the 624 (and the 514, which is what I currently have)?  I was looking at the specs and they all seem pretty much the same to me.  However, I'm not really a techie, so I may have missed something obvious.

EDIT:  I figured it out.  624 is 108 mbps and the 524 is only 54 mbps.

Gah... "Super G" Marketing detected... trip the alarms!!

See my post "here"

Edit: Which for the lazy basically says to avoid the "Super G" stuff, there are a bunch of "gotcha's" for the non-standard extentions.  Best to spend the extra money elsewhere, like Mario Kart!

Thanks for the help, Shecky.

So basically it seems like you're saying it's better to spend $25.75 on a D-Link AirPlus G DI-524 High Speed 2.4GHz Wireless Router (54 Mbps) than to spend $36.25 on a D-Link AirPlus Xtreme G DI-624 High-Speed 2.4GHz Wireless Router (108 Mbps)?

Also, is the 624 actually worse than the 524, or is it just not better?  I read your posts in the thread you linked to, but I was a little confused.

Thanks.

Hmm, well lets see.  I'll try to break this down...

If I recall correctly, both D-Link and Netgear use Atheros' "Super G" to obtain speeds of 108 Mbps.  "Super G" and methods like it are proprietary, aka they don't follow any standard.  This leads to

Caveat #1: Non-Standard solution locks you into a particular vendor for all equipment in your wireless network.  In other words for you to obtain speeds of 108 Mbps, *all* wireless devices would need to be a "D-Link Xtreme G" device in your example.

The way Atheros obtains the higher speeds is to use the proprietary extensions to bond multiple channels.  End result is that it uses a large chunk of the 2.4GHz band.  So in the presence of any other devices in the 2.4GHz band (phones, normal 802.11g devices, etc), this leads to two things:

Caveat #2: Should the "Super G" play nice, it would need to operate at normal 54Mbps speeds in the presence of any other wireless devices (even if the signal is your neighbors! ).  Thus, your 108 Mbps router is really operating at 54Mbps.

Caveat #3: Should you or the device force "Super G" between compatible devices, there would exist a high likelihood to interfere with normal devices operating in that frequency.  Basically your Super G device would step all over the other devices.

Also, since this is mostly just a home net, do you have a need to transfer large amounts of data between machines in your network wirelessly?   Otherwise, 54Mbps is plenty fast to keep up with even the fastest connections to the outside world.

So is it worth it... up to you, hopefully the above will help anyone interested in making the decision.

I think I'll save the $10 and go with the 524.  I have a D-Link wireless card right now, but it's only 802.11b.  I don't think the 108 Mbps will really make a difference.

Thanks for your help.

Has anyone tested the online with a Netgear WGT624? Nintendo knocked its compatibility rating from 2 stars to 1 and says it rarely connects. I won't be able to test it with Mario Kart until tonight (assuming I can find a copy of Mario Kart around here). I'm hoping I can still get it to work. Otherwise, I'm going to be fairly frustrated.
