Also, is the 624 actually worse than the 524, or is it just not better? I read your posts in the thread you linked to, but I was a little confused.
Hmm, well lets see. I'll try to break this down...
If I recall correctly, both D-Link and Netgear use Atheros' "Super G" to obtain speeds of 108 Mbps. "Super G" and methods like it are proprietary, aka they don't follow any standard. This leads to
Caveat #1: Non-Standard solution locks you into a particular vendor for all equipment in your wireless network. In other words for you to obtain speeds of 108 Mbps, *all* wireless devices would need to be a "D-Link Xtreme G" device in your example.
The way Atheros obtains the higher speeds is to use the proprietary extensions to bond multiple channels. End result is that it uses a large chunk of the 2.4GHz band. So in the presence of any other devices in the 2.4GHz band (phones, normal 802.11g devices, etc), this leads to two things:
Caveat #2: Should the "Super G" play nice, it would need to operate at normal 54Mbps speeds in the presence of any other wireless devices (even if the signal is your neighbors!

). Thus, your 108 Mbps router is really operating at 54Mbps.
Caveat #3: Should you or the device force "Super G" between compatible devices, there would exist a high likelihood to interfere with normal devices operating in that frequency. Basically your Super G device would step all over the other devices.
Also, since this is mostly just a home net, do you have a need to transfer large amounts of data between machines in your network wirelessly? Otherwise, 54Mbps is plenty fast to keep up with even the fastest connections to the outside world.
So is it worth it... up to you, hopefully the above will help anyone interested in making the decision.
