Hey Bill, maybe you should change the name of this thread so new people don't get their hopes up only to find this is from over a year ago.

I hope ShyGuy purposefully linked an article on another site that uses PGC as a source because he wanted to be funny.  =P

Why on Earth would I get my news from PGC? I just come here for things like reading Karl complain about Excite Truck

Never played Earthbound, but I hear there is only one game on the SNES.  Maybe there's not enough financial reason to port any others over?

I just don't see how, if properly marketed, this game doesn't sell 200,000 copies minimum! Surely with the success it was in Japan and the fact that it's a GAMEBOY GAME, that would more than recoup the translation costs...VC makes the most sense, but then they'd have to redo the game so fit the larger resolution (I guess).

This seems weird since NOA was willing to take a risk on something like Electroplankton.  In comparison this is at least a franchise game that some people recognize and Earthbound already has a cult fanbase in North America.  Maybe Earthbound on the VC will sell well enough to convince NOA otherwise (though who knows when that will be available).  As an RPG the translation would take longer than some other titles so I'll give them some slack there.

It just seems like with Earthbound NOA is using Earthbound's original sales from 1995 as an indication of interest in North America.  Since FFVII the market for an RPG in North America has vastly improved.  If NOA used their wacky Earthbound logic for everything Pokemon and Fire Emblem would still be stuck in Japan.

Translating Earthbound is a much bigger undertaking than translating Electroplankton.  You can translate Electroplankton in an afternoon.

How about this?

It's a link to a site that cites a site that cites PGC.

“Mother” series is important to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo’s president, who worked on the series years ago as a developer. It certainly is a franchise near and dear to his heart, and it’s something I’m trying to get smart on to understand whether or not there is an opportunity here. But certainly I’ve seen the success in Japan. That hasn’t gone unnoticed. And it’s certainly something we’re looking at.” -Reggie

If I had a translation patch I could play it.

What I find dumb is that you can name everything at the beginning of the game using English, but there is no option to play in English.  Why have English alphabet if it's only used when giving names at the very beginning?

Because it's not uncommon for the Japanese to use the English alphabet for some slang words and/or names...
