Hot Coffee decision already affecting other games
« on: July 22, 2005, 02:12:54 PM »
To the surprise of probably nobody one of the lawyers involved in nailing Rockstar for the San Andreas Hot Coffee mod has another target.  Believe it or not it's The Sims 2.

He's complaining that mods can allow for The Sims nudity to be uncensored and since there are chlidren in the game it can be turned into a pedophilia simulator.  EA claims that without the blurring the Sims have no private parts.  They look like a naked Barbie.  If they're telling the truth this hopefully won't amount to anything but it pisses me off just the same.

It hasn't even been a week since the ESRB changed San Andreas' rating and already the precedence it set is affecting other games.  A publisher is now responsible for stuff that other people can do to their games.  This is scary stuff.

I'll bet DOA will get nailed next as the female characters have nipples and nude hacks are pretty common.

Metroid should be AO since Samus has boobs.  The bust of her suit is clearly enlarged to fit her oversized and sexually charged bosom, teaching kids that's okay to become an exhibitionist, and that it could lead to great interalactic adventures lol lactic adventures

If other people can mod it by altering the graphics themselves, big deal...It should only matter when the devs put the material in the games themselves...

Good Lord why The Sims?  Aren't there a bunch of EASIER targets?

Let the flood gates open.  This is exactly what will happen if the ESRB cave in to pressure.   Now these folks are going after amost every game that were altered by outside forces that don't meet their standard of moral approval.  Its their MO, and unless the ESRB or the big game companies under attack don't fight back,  violent games will now be rated as AO instead of M.  I don't see why game companies don't fight back.  The facts are on their side.  I'm sure the Supreme Court will back them up on this. Its not like these games are obscene.

EA and the ESRB, wait a sec, am I about to side with EA?!?, should fight back and hold their ground. People are just being stupid. Crap, I'm defending EA. The Sims were just digital Barbie dolls anyway, so the fact that they have no genitalia is further proof of that. Anyhoo, any 2 year old can disrobe a Barbie. But what 11 year old will go through the trouble of putting in a code to see nothing?!?

My stance is this: Publisher/developers are responsible if the code is in the disc even if its not intentional it is still in the software product as unused code.  And also I think retailers should really pay more attention if a minor is buying  M game with out parental knowledge just because all of this B$ wont be happening.

That guy is Jackass Thompson, an idiot on par with the PNAC guys that wants to see a "Columbine times ten" to get anti-game legislation passed. Kinda like how Nero burned Rome in order to have a reason for hunting down Christians or Hitler burned the Reichstag to get his "Verordnung zum Schutz von Volk und Staat" passed.

The uncensor hack is trivial and can be done with a text editor, getting realistic nude skins is a completely different matter but Hot Coffee didn't include nudity OOTB either.

Can't blame EA for "nude" Sims, what were they supposed to do, add bathing suits or the ever-popular towels (Love Hina anyone?) when the characters take a bath? They are already blurring out the areas and made them just detailled enough for the blur to look realistic, nothing more. Thompson claims the Sims run around naked with fully detailled sexual organs. I don't know what kind of mutant he is but humans don't look like Barbie dolls when they're undressed, there's a bit more under that clothing.

What is funny is the guy got the information from us.  When we started complaining on the message boards about GTA and Hot Coffee we mentioned the fact about EA's SIMS.

Thompson probably doesn't understand that the nude Sims are hacks and patches.  He probably doesn't understand that Game Developers can do very little to prevent that from happening.  Its just changing out graphic models.

This is just the Pendlium swinging the other direction.  We believed that we were finally making grounds with games becoming mainstream and viewed as a legit entertainment for adults and kids...however it never was true.  And we actually have game developers to blame.  They weren't making mature games.  They were making games with graphic content.

Games that I actually view as mature games are games that don't rely on the violence.  They find another way to represent it, or leave it out...but still try to find a good story.  Also games that glorify illegal activity aren't mature they are almost always immature, thug games.

Until the industry takes a good long look at itself and decides to truly change then we will continue to have this problem.

Thompson is malicious, I don't doubt he knows that he's talking bullshit, he's lying to stir up the masses. That guy's a terrorist, intent on provoking fears and hurting our rights. Off to Guantanamo with that evildoer!

Spak-Spang: The "mature" rating is only called like that because they couldn't find a better label for 18+ that does not suggest pornographic content and the MPAA didn't let the ESRB use the same labelling scheme. Hollywood movies are not mature either but I don't see people complaining anymore. Ignore Jackass Thompson, you could just as well listen to some UFO-freak about "what the mainstream thinks".

The things he talks about pedophilia because kids can be seen naked is creepy stuff and makes me wonder what kind of person he is to come up with that.

Personally I find the pixelation of a naked baby or kid to be more disturbing that no pixelation... seriously, is a damn baby!! why put the pixelation there? to not get some people "excited" or what? thats pretty disturbing. There really shouldnt be a need to put pixelation with a naked baby... or a little girl for that matter...

I don't doubt that the ESRB and EA will fight back on this one, as there's really no way around this sort of thing without changing the concepts of the Sims.  And really, if there are some sick people out there enacting pedophillic acts with their Sims, wouldn't we rather have them doing that then running around looking for real victims?
That's my opinion, not yours.

Sonic is nude too! As is most of his friends...

Common, this whole thing is careening out of control!

They have to define what is explicitly pornographic and which is not. Otherwise Donald Duck is illegal too!

Sonic is only interesting to furries and even they prefer Tails.

Seen on Slashdot:
Rumour has it that, with the right modifications, Jack Thompson can be naked. A penis and exposed ass are both visible when this mod is applied, and the makers of Jack Thompson released him to the world in full knowledge that he can be naked.
