Yea.... I mean geez if NSMB sold a million copies in two days... I'd imagine Pokemon will sell way more.

It's for the DS, its got online though WFC, and tons of new Pokemon to capture. Any one else want to bet we'll see at least 3 million copies sold in the first week?

I doubt they'll be able to ship enough to sell that many right away, but it will sell every copy they can produce.

I'm guessing at most 200,000.  Pokemon will sell 800,000 of each game and then it will sell at least 500,000 a week per game for the next 2 weeks, then it'll drop to 100,000 total for both games for the next 5 weeks, then 40,000 a week for the next 2 years like Brain Age.

PartyBear: Nah, I don't have a PSP.  I only learned the greatness of Sony quite recently!  In my opinion, PSP is fine, but the game selection is meh...not as bad as people claim, but not good enough to justify the price.  I played a PSP once, for about half an hour. It was fine, but also proof positive that games are what make a good system, not hardware.

Don't listen to that crazy IceCold.  He's just jealous because I'm not going to invite him to my "PSThwii" party!

Nintendo seems to have only been able to manufacture 2,000,000 units for launch... a million of each ... all sold out.

Nintendo also seems to have only been able to stockpile around a million DS Lites this week, 500,000 of those the Pokemon P/D Special edition ones ... also probably sold out.

If not for the cart shortage, FFIII would be #1 I'm sure. Oh well, this will be the last PS2 game we'll see up at #1 for a while (probably ever lol). Expect Pokemon to be #1 and 2 for at least untill Dec (is my guess )

Predictions for next week:

Assuming the two Pokemon games ship 750,000 to 1,000,000 copies each (reasonable? unreasonable?), we should see combined sales anywhere from 1.4-1.8 million. Virtually a complete sellout. It could go even closer to the total sellout number of 2,000,000, but I'm going to be conservative. I highly doubt Nintendo ships less than this. The system numbers become tricky, because we're talking about a rather large install base. However, it is perhaps safe to assume with such a high concentration of the 'non-games' doing well, a large part of the Pokemon audience (many kids) haven't gotten a DS yet. So I expect Nintendo will also virtually sellout of DSLs (totally selling out of the Pokemon version). I suspect they'll have 500,000-800,000 available, but this might be highballing it a lot. So I suspect we'll see 3-5 times what we saw this week, anywhere from 400,000-700,000. Should Nintendo ship as many as 1,000,000 systems, however, we could see a virtual sellout of 800,000-900,000. Do not expect that, however. Because the Pokemon game has likely been sold out, or nearly so, since the first day, a lot of new system purchases will be held off until the next shipment of games. If we take the average DSLs per week at about 135,000, then I would say we'll see about 1.6 to 2 million extra sales over the next 6 weeks (aka. 2.4 to 2.8 million DS systems sold in that period).

In summary:
Pokemon combined sales - 1.7 million (1.4-1.8 range with a 1.2 lowball and 1.9 highball depending on shipments)
System sales next week - 600,000 (450-700 range with a 400 lowball and 850 highball depending on shipments)

According to a translation, 1 million copies of each game was shipped, and close, if not all have sold out.  Nintendo also anticipated this demand and shipped 1 million DS Lites.  Both the 2 million Pokemon copies and 500,000 DS Lites sold within a matter of a couple hours.  HOLY FRICK.  Those are some impressive numbers.

Wait, they shipped a MILLION DS Lites?  If that's true, then 2006 DS pwnership in Japan will go up by, like 10-16% this week!

Square really screwed themselves over.. first off, they tell Nintendo that they had better have enough DSes for the launch of FFIII. Then, instead of Nintendo taking the publishing duty, they do that themselves and mess it up badly. Now, instead of selling hundreds of thousands more games, because of the shortages they have way less than the potential. And now Pokemon is going to overshadow it for a long, long time..

Well, SqureEnix expressed the concern to Nintendo that they wanted enough DS hardware to be available on FFIII launch day. There were plenty of DS and ultimately (or so i've heard) they sold through 90% of the FFIII copies shipped for launch day. I don't know how it really could have gone better, aside from selling out 100%.

Honestly, I can't see how Pokemon DS wouldn't totally out shadow FFIII. That game is going to be huge.

Yeah, having more DS hardware available on launch day wouldn't have helped Final Fantasy III's sales at all.  I think this goes to show that Square Enix underestimated demand for the game: not only did it not produce enough copies, it assumed there'd need to be even more DS owners in order to buy all those copies.

Square can't be too disappointed with that, it means that FFIII's sales are way better than the company planned.  The only way Square Enix could be disappointed with this outcome is if Nintendo has been holding back cartridges on it...which probably is the case, since Nintendo needs them for Pokemon.

Seriously, though, having too many customers is hardly ever a bad thing.
