Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 200: Up Where We Belong
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:02:29 AM »
I'm beginning to think I'm going crazy when it comes to Puzzle Quest.  I've mentioned this on another forum (a long time ago) and no one else confirms it and everyone happily ignores it:

Puzzle Quest is unplayable.

I actually loved Puzzle Quest until I realized that there were only a handful of patterns that the gems are assembled at the beginning of every match.  And when I say "assembled" I also mean the pattern in which each additional gem is dropped down onto the playing area.  The replacement gems are all queued up in the same order for the handful of patterns.  They are not randomly scrambled.  The next time you're playing, pay attention to the beginning of each game.  Soon enough you'll find the same gems in the same places.  If you make the same move, the same gems will replace the ones that disappear.  Also, if you make the same move, the AI will make the same counter move, and that pattern will continue.

Once I noticed this and confirmed it, I put the game down and never touched it again.

Is this fixed in Puzzle Quest II?

In other words, he's just mad he didn't think of it first.

Gotcha.

The 3DS sounds really awesome. It's incredibly unfortunate that it's a handheld. I mean, of all the avenues that could utilize 3D technology, handheld gaming is probably the last thing I ever would have thought of. Overall it's much more of a home-centric technology, and it's weird that they're focusing it on the handheld market.

Maybe I'm disappointed because I'm not huge on handheld gaming. If I'm out somewhere, I'm there for a reason, and generally I'm there with friends. Why would I waste my outside and do other stuff time playing video games? I play video games at home, whether it's by myself or with others, and if I'm at home, why am I going to huddle over a tiny handheld system when I could be much more comfortably playing on a TV?

I'm left wondering why all this third-party support couldn't have been pushed on the Wii.

It makes perfect sense.

If it were a home console it would only work if people already had 3D TVs.

Once 3D TVs hit mass market I'm sure 3D gaming will soon follow.

Until then, 3D gaming on your hand held without the need for glasses.

Oswald: I did notice some of those inconsistencies, among others. Several major plot threads just go nowhere. A major example: *snip* As I said on the show, Heavy Rain sets up all kinds of interesting characters and conflicts, only to leave them all hanging with its contrived twist at the end. If the story's climax is basically set regardless of player choices, then there is no excuse for that climax to be so out of sync with everything before it.

I think you just described Lost.

FYI:

I don't know too much about Trauma Team but... there are so many similarities between the "diagnostician" and House because there is no medical specialty for "Diagnostician" in the real world.  It's a made up specialty for the show.  (I think Cuddy also mentions it in one of the early episodes.)

I like the article, but the format kills it for me.

You really need to get rid of the multiple pages and just make it one nice complete piece.

Either I'm misunderstanding your reaction or you don't understand that statistic; it's not saying that 18.7 percent of 2009's Wii sales were in the last two months, it's saying that 18.7 percent of all the Wii systems Nintendo has ever sold in the United States were sold in the last two months. Maybe you got that already; even if you did, it's so staggering a feat that it bears repeating.

Ah, misread.

Got it.

Another neat Wii factoid: nearly one-fifth (18.7 percent) of all Wii consoles sold since its launch were sold during November and December 2009.

Hm... 18.7% of the sales took place in 16.67% of the year?

Neat.

Wow, thanks.  I would have never figured that out.  I got tired of trying and downloaded Shining Force II in the mean time.  Maybe I'll get back to Bomberman now.

I can't seem to find the option to switch your bomberman guy out for your Mii.  Help please.  :(

I've been reading this site since the very, very beginning of Planet Gamecube.  At the time I was obsessed with Nintendo news.  I don't play much these days.  (I don't even own a Wii, 360 or PS3.)

The guys on the podcast read my email so I figured I should finally stop by and say hello.

Maybe I'll write them some more.
