This doesn't bother me.

I think most people consume Nintendo (and general video game) news through secondary sources like websites, youtube videos, and podcasts.  The information will get out there regardless.

Hooray for normal controls.

Nintendo, forget the following games ever existed:
Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

Just carry with those respective series as if those games were never made and thus could have no damaging influence on later titles.  Thank you.

Phantom Hourglass was amazing.

A little easy, but one of my favorite Zeldas.

Release date confirmed for May 24th.

This is going to be a day 1 purchase for me.

Loved the original SNES series.  Always thought the Wii game looked really good.

I took about a year off from actively playing my 3DS, so I've been playing catch up.

Retail Releases
Kid Icarus
Legend of Zelda: OoT
Metal Gear Solid 3D
New Super Mario Bros. 2
Tales of the Abyss

eShop
Crashmo
Pushmo

Opinion on these games?  Worth it?

Has anyone bought any of the maps (in-game)?  Are they worth it?

I just unlocked them and quickly browsed through them and I can see it all adding up real quick.

the excitement of losing characters only takes you so far... after a while it becomes "oh @#$% i have to start over again and the boss is one hit from death..."

I started the game on Hard Casual mode and 2 hours in, I got the the Paralogue chapter where you have to keep the shepherd alive/level him up for him to join.

I attempted 3 times and then deleted my save and started over in Normal Casual mode.

In both those cases though, did you guys have to restart or did you choose to?

I had to restart to get the experience I wanted out of the game.

But nice try. ^_^

The experience you wanted? So it was optional? I'm not trying to catch in some sort of trap, lol. I genuinely want to know.

Yes... losing a character does not result in a Game Over unless you lose 1 of the main characters.

This is a defining feature of the Fire Emblem series.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Pokémon X/Y
« on: April 14, 2013, 06:11:47 AM »
Why don't I care about Pokémon? Seriously. Unlike with every other Nintendo series that I grew up with as a kid, I enjoyed Pokémon back then but honestly can't get excited for it at all now. I'm sure the fact that each new release in the series was similar to the previous ones has something to do with it, but even X/Y isn't really doing anything for me. It'll probably be the first Pokémon game that I've bought since Pokémon Stadium, and while I think it's cool that they're finally making some changes, I still can't seem to get excited for it.

Why knows? Maybe that attitude will change as we get closer to the games launching.

This may be the first Pokemon game I pick up since the original Pokemon Red.

I've thinking about it.  The changes from Red/Blue to Gold/Silver seemed so incremental.  And then after that, I might have been in college or something.  Then I lost track of how many Pokemon there actually were.  Wrap that altogether and you get a snowballing effect of disinterest from me towards the franchise.

I'll have to read more before deciding whether or not to pick it up.

I just got my 3DS when the Pikachu Edition was released a few weeks ago... but here are my games:

Super Mario 3D Land
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
Professor Layton and The Miracle Mask
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legend of the Titan
Fire Emblem: Awakening

All digital download and I probably wouldn't have gotten Luigi's Mansion if it wasn't free with a special offer.  But it's a nice little game.

I'm conflicted on whether or not to buy Ocarina of Time 3D.  I've beaten the game once way back in 1996/1997.  I remember liking it.  But the problem is that Wind Waker is my favorite Zelda.  If it were Wind Waker, I'd pick it up no problem.  (I know they're remaking it for Wii U, but I'm never going to buy a console ever again for reasons I won't get into here.)

Hm...

Maybe 15 years ago I'd be up for the challenge, but not anymore I suppose.

Were they doing Jedi Academy III?

No?

Then nothing of value was lost.

I'm just sad they've shut down the Clone Wars tv show. :(

So spent about $320 on a Pikachu 3DS, Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion (free promotion), Professor Layton, and Etrian Odyssey IV.  And so far I'm very happy with my purchase.  I think it's a really nice piece of hardware.

New Question: If you could only have one non-downloadable title for your 3DS, what game would it be?

Even though I'm a digital download guy only, it feels a little bit of a waste to have an unused cart slot on my 3DS.  I wouldn't mind just having 1 and just leaving it in there forever.

I was thinking about getting Chrono Trigger (DS) because I only beat it once and that was almost 20 years ago.  I barely remember the story.  On the other hand, maybe I'd be better off with something Tetris-y that is more pick-up & play and is more timeless.

Oops.  Guess I was stressing for nothing.

Alright, got it all settled here on the last day of the promotion.

FYI: You have to register for a Club Nintendo account and link that account to your 3DS before buying Luigi's Mansion from the eShop for it to all work correctly.  If you don't, you'll have to contact customer service, they'll need some information, and they'll have to activate it manually.  The back-and-forth communication isn't the best when dealing with a 7 day promotion, but it all worked out in the end.

Just posting this for future reference for similar promotions.

So now I have Super Mario 3D Land, Luigi's Mansion (free), Professor Layton, and Etrian Odyssey (which I'm liking a lot so far).  And with 4 games, that leaves me with only 9000+ blocks of memory left on my SD card.  I'll probably get a 32MB card later.  I should have one laying around.

Nintendo Gaming / Etrian Odyssey IV - Guild Name / Adventurers
« on: March 30, 2013, 04:19:35 PM »
I just bought a 3DS and downloaded Etrian Odyssey IV.  I've never played any of the other titles in the series and I didn't play the demo.  It just looked like a game I'd really like so I went for it.  The guild formation at the beginning reminds me a lot of the original Final Fantasy so I thought I'd have some fun with it.  Here is my guild that I'm going into the game blind:

Guild Name: Zerg

Zergling1 (Landsknecht)
Zergling2 (Landsknecht)
Viper (Sniper)
Queen (Healer)
Infestor (Runemaster)

(Zerglings in front and the rest in the back.  I thought about going with a Hydralisk (Nightseeker), but that's just no good.  Zerglings spawn in pairs, right?)

I've made goofier parties in Final Fantasy.  So not knowing anything about their skills or balance, this is what I'm going with.

(lol?)  :cool;

What does your party look like?  :-X

edit: Just finished the first mission and got my skyship.  And I named it the Overlord, of course.  (Leviathan wouldn't fit.)

edit - Sounds like it's your first 3DS system. Just ask if you've got questions. Some things you'll want to know:

- The XL comes with a 4GB SD card. If you plan on buying everything digitally, you'll want to upgrade.
- You can transfer content between cards simply by copying everything on a PC, then copy to the new card.
- You queue up downloads by selecting "Download Later". The downloads start after you close the eShop.

How much memory do games usually take up?

edit: Did just make a mistake?  I read that if you pre-order you get a free download for Mario or Layton (or some others) for free?  I ordered on Amazon so I can still cancel one of those if I act right away.

This is the free game deal that I've heard of:
http://club2.nintendo.com/3ds-xl-promo/

With that in mind, I'd cancel either Prof Layton or Mario 3D from your order and get Luigi's Mansion instead. That way you get an extra game for the same price.

I actually just cancelled all 3 games.  I didn't know they were all available for digital download.  I assume I have to get the physical copies of either Pokemon or Luigi's Mansion to get the code... hm...

Um, retail games have been available on the eShop since last August when New Super Mario Bros. 2 was available both on cartridge and digitally. Since then, all of Nintendo's first party 3DS games are on the eShop as are many third party games. Over 50 retail games can also be bought on the eShop. You can if a game is also on the eShop here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nintendo_3DS_games

Perfect.

I cancelled all my Amazon orders before they shipped.

I thought you couldn't, but then I read this press release about the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon / XL offer:

Quote
Nintendo is offering a special bonus for people who buy both a Nintendo 3DS XL system and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity. Anyone who registers a Nintendo 3DS XL system and either Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity or Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon with Club Nintendo between March 21 and April 30 will receive a code to download one of five Nintendo 3DS games for free: Super Mario 3D Land, Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone!, Star Fox 64 3D or Freakyforms Deluxe: Your Creations, Alive!

Can you only download some games?  All games?  Or this is just a special thing?

After listening to this podcast, I finally decided to buy some new hardware and have just spend ~$380 in the past 30 minutes:

Nintendo 3DS XL Pikachu Yellow Limited Edition
Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask
Super Mario 3D Land
Nintendo Official Elite Transporter Case
Nyko Power Kit

It should be said that the last console I played heavily was the Gamecube.  I owned a Wii, but I didn't really play it that much.  I never owned a PS2, PS3, Xbox, or 360.  I actually stopped buying DVDs or any other type of physical media for almost 10 years now.  If I can download/stream everything to my laptop until the end of time that would be perfect.  I don't want to own a TV or regular console ever again.

It should also be said that the last Pokemon game I played was the original Pokemon Red.  I just thought the Pikachu edition looked funny and I don't think I've ever owned a limited edition anything before.

I've never played any of the Etrian Odyssey games before.  Is there anything I should know before jumping into IV?  Should I just wikipedia the others?

(I feels this was a better purchase than backing Shroud of the Avatar on Kickstarter for $400.  $400 would have gotten me a personalized NPC and a personalized gravestone.  I played Ultima Online on and off for 12 years and even I couldn't pull the trigger on that.  There was no way I would be getting my money's worth.)

edit: Did just make a mistake?  I read that if you pre-order you get a free download for Mario or Layton (or some others) for free?  I ordered on Amazon so I can still cancel one of those if I act right away.

I think the game looks really good.

I understand the immediate comparisons to Pikmin, but the first thing I thought of was to treat the interchangeable group as a customize-able characters.  Just treat it as one entity with parts that can be swapped out and/or added to with pieces that have other powers and specialties.  Instead of ungrades, you get new members, and your little band of merry men marches on.

From the little I saw of it, I think the graphics could use some more polish, but the rest of it looks great.

Ordered.

I decided to go with the Gold Bundle from Gamestop for $70.

The shipping costs were actually more for the 2 products from Amazon than the bundle alone from Gamestop.  It kind of evened out.  Anyway, I kind of like having it be one piece instead of an add-on.

Ok, so that's a better deal then?

I don't really care too much for the gold controller.  It'll be nice, but I just want whatever's cheaper.

I think motion pluses are like $25 on Amazon.

edit: whoa, nm.  I need to shop around a little I think.  I think they slashed the price down to $16.
