NWR's Elite Five

Elite Five Matt

by Matthew Zawodniak - January 15, 2020, 6:22 am EST

Prepare for trouble when Matt makes it double.

Rabb.it the Cinderace

Rabb.it was named for the now-defunct communal streaming site of the same name, inspired by the fact that both started strong but ultimately crashed and burned as time went on. Cinderace is my least favorite of the starter evolutions, don’t @ me. But regardless of my disappointment, I am a Fire-type trainer at heart, and Rabb.it was a loyal companion from the very start of my adventure.

Tira the Vileplume

Originally captured as a Gloom (hence the name - I had a pretty good time playing Soul Calibur over the past year), Tira replaced a Garbador named ‘Your Waifu’ due to her Grass and Poison dual-typing with a splash of Fairy-type in her moveset. Sleep Powder and Poison Powder were instrumental in controlling the flow of battle and inhibiting my opponent’s ability to get ahead in combat.

Yertle the Drednaw

I caught Yertle the Turtle as an ill-tempered Chewtle, and he frankly did not really pull his weight as a Water-type or a Rock-type. He only has one water move (Liquidation) and no rock moves at all. His Bite was kind of useful whenever it managed to cause an opponent to flinch, and Counter was kinda good I guess? He skated by on this team through my failure to understand that he would never be able to Gigantamax. Yertle, why did you even come here?

Arachne the Galvantula

I have been a big fan of Galvantula since it first appeared in Gen 5, and her double shot of the Speed-lowering Electroweb and the paralyzing Discharge made her a great option to inhibit an opponent’s utility. I caught her very late in the adventure though so I never got around to replacing her Screech with something more useful, but she managed to pull her weight nonetheless.

501st Legion the Falinks

This is the best freaking Pokémon ever made.

Ronald the Corviknight

Ronald was named through a series of convoluted leaps of logic when a friend made the observation that “Rookidee” almost vaguely sounds like Mickey D’s. With a high Defense stat, respectable Sp. Def and excellent HP, Ronald was a great tank who could soak damage whenever I needed to stall - and stall he did! I likely would not have beaten the champion without him.
