The Game Boy Color is in the house this week!

Another Wednesday in Japan means another handful of releases for the eShop on the Nintendo 3DS. This week, a few new games and some video content arrive to whet gamers’ appetites. Here’s what was released this week in Japan:

3DS Downloadable Titles
ARC Style - Solitaire - 300 yen
Kaitō Sutina to 30 no Hōseki - 700 yen

Virtual Console

Balloon Fight GB (Game Boy Color) - 600 yen

Video Content

This week in Japan, the contest winners for the Zelda Flip Note contest were announced and gamers are now able to view the videos of all the winners from Japan on the eShop. Currently, users can also view these videos online (which you can view here). The compilation video available in the eShop is a little over nine minutes long. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword keeps with the Zelda theme in the videos this week, as a new three-minute video showing off the second dungeon in the game is available. It is a water based dungeon that is set near Floria Lake in the game world. The video shows that the player will be able to make use of one of the new weapons in the game, the whip, throughout this dungeon to solve puzzles and fight enemies.

Software Impressions

While it is tempting to pick up another Game Boy Color title just to simply say I have it, it is difficult to find the justification to plop down 600 yen for the game, especially considering that 3DS Ambassadors already have access to the NES version for free. Regardless, Balloon Fight GB has an interesting release history. Oddly enough, it was originally released in North America and Europe on the original Game Boy in 1990 and 1991, respectively, as Balloon Kid. Two years later, a re-programmed version was released in Japan using the Hello Kitty franchise titled Hello Kitty World. It wasn’t until 2000 that Nintendo published the Game Boy Color version exclusively in Japan as Balloon Fight GB. Unlike the previously released versions, this version allowed players to save their progress and featured Super Game Boy functionality.

If any of you are dying to know more about the game, feel free to sound off in the forums and I can make it happen!

Screen Caps of the Hello Kitty Balloon fight or it didn't happen.

I wonder if Nintendo realizes how close Floria is to Florida.  I know a US dev would probably not miss the chance to put in at least one Florida in joke.

After watching part of the video (the part with Balloon Kid), it almost makes me want this game now. It seems pretty different from Balloon Fight with the only similarity being floating around on balloons. The Virtual Console whore inside of me just might get this.

I think the little girl with the Balloons is flapping her dress to fly ...

You just might be right about that.
