PGC E3 2006 Awards

Game of Show – Wii

by Michael Cole - May 22, 2006, 6:50 pm EDT

The PGC staff picks its favorites from the year's biggest funfest!

This award goes to our favorite Wii game that was on the showroom floor.

PGC's E3 Awards 2006!

Winner: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Karl Castaneda: Metroid's all about exploration, and Prime 3 is no different. Expect the same epic feel as the last two games with the added functionality of the Wii controller. It's looking to be a great combination, too, so Retro may just end up stealing the spotlight at the system's launch.

Evan Burchfield: Metroid only had three demo stations in Nintendo's booth compared to umpteen for the much less impressive Zelda demo; also unlike Zelda, Metroid was worth waiting in line for. It is the most intuitive game I got to play on Wii, and definitely the first thing I will purchase at system launch.

Jonathan Metts: Metroid Prime 3 not only had the longest demo and the most polish of any Wii game, it actually felt like a real game, not a tech demo or half-baked idea. Metroid Prime 3 asserted its authority over all other Wii games by promising to be a natural yet significant evolution to a couple of the best games of the last generation. It is a real, epic adventure game that takes itself seriously and just happens to use the Wii controller better than any other game I played at E3. Nintendo wants to get past the stereotype of the hardcore gamer sitting alone on his couch in a dark room. But guess what...Metroid Prime 3 is exactly the kind of game you'd want to play sitting alone on your couch in a dark room. So above all else, this game proves that Wii has something to offer the hardcore gamers in addition to all the casual stuff.

Mike Gamin: I could rip shields away from space pirates all day. Whoever told Retro to use the grapple beam more deserves a cookie.

Jonathan Metts: I like cookies.

Runner-up: Super Mario Galaxy
