Seriously? You are starting with this game on the Nintendo 3DS?

In the early days of the PC Engine, there was a demo to show off the system’s graphical capabilities. This experience was called The Kung Fu, better known as China Warrior in the West. The game saw release as part of a volume based series on the PC Engine and was one of the first titles to ever come out on the thing.

Even though the game looked quite impressive for its day, it does kind of show its age now. Everything is well animated, and the game includes some neat background effects to make it all look quite cool. The sprites, while massive, still look good, though they are somewhat silly looking now. The music is surprisingly catchy and completely fits the Chinese-styled theme.

This is where the positives end though, as the gameplay is shallow in the every sense of the word. Sure, the game does challenge you from beginning to end, but it is not enough to really be all that interesting. It is easy to get frustrated with the clunky controls, which will make you scream in agony. You will always walk to the right, unless you decide to jump or crouch using the D-Pad. The other options are used to punch which you can only do while moving or crouching and kicking, which is for the active jumper only. The attacks feel sluggish and they never change the game up.

The Kung Fu was a sound pitch for the PC Engine, but it’s pretty lost of its purpose in this day and age. The gameplay is not very engaging, let alone interesting, and controlling the character around feels pretty bad. The game looks and sounds okay, but that can't save it from an ultimately dull experience.

Summary

Pros
  • Looks still alright
  • Music fits the theme well
Cons
  • Controls are very clunky
  • Game becomes boring real fast
  • Those large spirits are silly
