Super Worm Light

Nyko creates a new Worm Light for Game Boy Advance users? Can it outshine the original Worm Light? Oh -- what an awful pun.

Before the birth of the Afterburner, Nyko was responsible for one of the best lighting solutions for the Game Boy, the Worm Light. Easy to use and keep on your person, the Worm Light simply plugged into the Link Cable socket, drawing on minimal power from the Game Boy itself. It was basically a small lamp on a bendy wire, which was fairly easy to adjust.

When the Game Boy Advance rolled around, a new Worm Light was created with a pass-through port for the Link Cable, so you could still link up with the Worm Light installed. Now, Nyko has decided that the Game Boy Advance Worm Light wasn't good enough, and has created the Super Worm Light. But just because it's "super" doesn't necessarily mean it's better.

The first problem with the Super Worm light is that it's huge. The main reason to play Game Boy is that it's portable, and putting on this Super Worm Light instantly hinders that portability factor. Rather than being a small light that attaches to your EXT. port, it's a massive piece of plastic that you have to align to the Game Boy Advance, slot into place and adjust. It makes the whole thing very cumbersome.

Secondly, there are two large rubber grips on the bottom of the Super Worm Light for "improved handling", according to package. Having tried and tried to figure out where you're supposed to place your hands, I can say that you'd have more luck figuring out a Rubik's Cube. It looks like the only way the grips would help you is if you pointed your hands vertically downwards on the sides of the Game Boy Advance, and then closed all your fingers.

Thirdly, there's the light itself. Once you've clipped it on and turned on the light, you'll notice that there's a laughably limited amount of adjustability (you can move the light three clicks before you're going into the 'folding' position). Fortunately though, the light does its job and allows you to see the screen. I tried it with Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and was able to play it without any problems.

Other positive features of the Super Worm Light include the pass through port, which allows you to use the Link Cable -- but not a GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cable. There's also the unit's sturdiness -- although it is huge and bulky, the bright side is it's not going to fall off anytime soon.

Overall, the Nyko Super Worm Light is an unnecessarily large accessory to attach to your Game Boy. Plus, if you're one who’ll keep taking it on and off, or folding and opening that light, it's going to scratch either your screen or the Game Boy itself at some point.

Well...it's silver. And the light itself does look okay. But it's too big and clunky.

Those "grips for improved handling" make the Game Boy Advance more difficult to hold!

Quality

Points off for the unnerving feeling that the light is going to spring up at any moment when you fold it downwards into place.

A good, solid light. It's not going to fall apart on you, that's for sure. But why does it need to be this large in the first place?

For half the price, you can get a less clunky product that does the same job and keeps the portability of your Game Boy Advance.

I don't like accessories that make a portable system bigger than it needs to be (Booster Boy, anyone?). The Nyko Super Worm Light is certainly no Booster Boy, but it is unnecessarily large. And there's nothing like the old saying - 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' Get yourself a regular Worm Light instead.

Summary

Pros
  • Can still use a Link Cable with the light
  • Lighting is adequate
  • On/off switch
  • Won't fall off easily
Cons
  • Difficult to adjust light
  • Good luck trying to use a GameCube/Game Boy Advance Cable
  • The grips are useless!
  • When clipped down, the light feels like it will spring up
