Minimalist and simple, Blek is a weird eShop puzzler that can wrinkle your brain.

Blek, with origins on mobile devices, is a unique, peculiar experience making its way to Wii U. It doesn’t begin with a title screen or a menu. There are no instructions. It just is. To play Blek is as simple as dragging your finger or stylus across the GamePad, but understanding Blek takes a little more thought. If you get it, it’s a delightful, challenging puzzle game. If you don’t, it can be an abstract mess.

Fortunately, this collection of 60 puzzles is gentle enough at first to let you ease in to the difficulty and attempt to grasp the simple, unexplained mechanics. The goal of each puzzle is to draw a line that manages to hit all of the colored circles and none of the black ones. This is done by drawing a line on the screen that then moves and repeats until it reaches the edge. At first, the puzzles can be solved simply by drawing a straight line to hit the circle, but soon enough, the solutions require you to draw elaborate movements that deftly weave through seas of black circles. More wrinkles are added as you go, such as circles that fire at other circles when struck.

This game challenges your mind in a boundlessly creative manner, as each puzzle has near-infinite solutions. That freedom is wonderful, often leading to great moments of joy and discovery, but it is also part of the problem with the game. Although the lack of guidance is novel at first, when you hit the later challenging puzzles, the game can get frustrating quickly. This is the kind of puzzle game that would benefit from letting you skip a puzzle, because sometimes you need to just approach the quandary from a new angle to comprehend it. As it stands, when you’re stumped, all you can do is go back and replay puzzles you’ve already figured out.

It’s so easy to hit a brick wall in Blek, which makes it great in the bite-sized play sessions of the mobile experience, but that doesn’t translate as well on a home console, even one with Off-TV play. This is a game that I’ve already looked into getting on my phone, because I’d rather play it there. It works perfectly well on the Wii U; it’s just that it’s not the type of game I play on the system.

Even with the occasional bout of frustration, Blek is mostly a marvel in how it’s designed. The organic way that it unfolds is amazing. While the Wii U version might not be the ideal way to experience it, Blek is still something worth looking at, even if it’s just as a curiosity.
