A delightful surprise, even if the experience does not last long.

Brutus & Futée was the first game in a long time where I had zero expectations. I didn't know anything about the game and wasn't even sure what it could be like. That surprise packed a powerful punch as Brutus & Futée turned out to be a strange, rewarding experience.

Brutus and Futée were once big stars, and their cartoons delighted many people around the world. For mysterious reasons, the artist disappears and this leaves the two characters leading their boring lives. In the game, you take over the director's chair and play out little scenes that will put the creatures in danger. It is like the Tom and Jerry cartoons, but you are responsible for the slapstick humor.

You may start to wonder how this translates into the actual gameplay and that is no surprise. In my opinion, I feel that Brutus & Futée is like a puzzle game. You are tasked with placing objects at the right places and finding the solution to push the scene forward. There are, however, additional goals to shoot for. Every failed attempt is seen as an outtake and collecting every single one rewards you with a golden star on a level. The game focuses really strongly on experimentation and does it with a style that is intriguing.

Brutus & Futée is simple to pick up and play, with everything being controlled by the stylus and touch screen. The game explains every step throughly, which makes you fully prepared after the first episode. It comes down to trial and error and most will see the end of the ride, so it is not overly challenging. The major problem is the length of the title, as it does not really last long, which is a big shame. If it had more adventures packed into this, I would have been more on board. The presentation is well enough and it is all quite colorful, but the audio could have been better at instances. Certain clips become repetitive fast and that becomes an annoyance in a game that features silent protagonists.

Brutus & Futée is a very intriguing game, but it does not last long. There are just three episodes here and they won't take you extremely long to complete. You can go back and shoot for the various goals in every puzzle, but that won't add much extra to the total counter. The game is delightful though, as it features a sharp style and gameplay that can be instantly picked up. The puzzles are also fun to experiment with and some hilarious moments do pop as a result of it. If you can deal with the length and some repetitive sounds, you can have a good time with this weird little adventure.
