Tested With Robots Review

The irony is what really seals the deal on this one.

When I reviewed Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Flapp & Zegeta, I thought I had seen the worst 2014 had to offer. It turns out that I was wrong, more wrong than I could have anticipated. Tested With Robots comes just in time to show us that approving everything on the Nintendo eShop might be a mistake.

The story is all about you. You are contracted as a game tester for the VideoGame Factory, where they need assistance on testing their constructions. Small white text on a black background pops in and out to tell you what you need to know, which is not a great start. You will be testing these levels with special robots, who act as stunt doubles for the future hero of their game. The game tells you that ''you don't look smart'' and boots up the tutorial.

From the moment I started controlling the robot, I knew that it felt wrong. Steering him left or right feels incredibly wonky and it stutters all over the place. Next to that, the robot seems to just float over the ground beneath him. The movement feels quite imprecise and this extends to the jumping mechanics. Jumping is not instant and you have to hold and let go of the button to charge a jump further. If you think that is bad enough, you can't jump in different directions if you decide to hop before moving. You can only make use of it if you are already strolling, which enraged me instantly.

The levels aren't well designed either. While you the first two stages are manageable, you will have to constantly time everything you do. This is because enemies and trickier obstacles are thrown into the mix to give you the sense of progression. The only thing it highlights are the game's distinct problems and it makes the game an unplayable mess.

What offended me the most is how the game looked on the television. All the assets for Tested With Robots seem to have been drawn in Microsoft Paint and I am not making this up. The robot looks cobbled together with just two frames of animation giving it shape. The title is obsessed with the color grey as that is the only thing displayed in the background. Basic squares and triangles make up the foreground, with the occasional stick figure to make the task more daunting. Apart from the graphics, the game takes forever to load up and is not even finely tuned for the Wii U. The music is the least offensive part of the game, but all in all, it is not good either.

Tested with robots is the definition of a game that is rotten to the core. Nothing about this title can be qualified as good or at least decent. It feels like the story it tried to tell: A beta product that should have been tested beforehand. If this is message you want sent to the world, there are better ways to do it. Can I also tell you that this is €10? It is kind of incredible.

Summary

Pros
Cons
  • Framerate and long loading times
  • Levels aren't well designed
  • MS Paint-esque presentation
  • Really bad controls
  • Story is ironic in the worst ways possible
