Too Human

by Jonathan Metts - January 12, 2001, 7:45 am EST

Silicon Knights is bringing its unfinished Playstation epic to the GameCube, with a massive overhaul and the same no-nonsense style. Futuristic, gritty, beautiful, and very serious, Too Human looks to be the ultimate game.

Too Human was originally a 4-disc Playstation game, expected to be complete by Winter 2000. It garnered several "Game of the Show" awards at the 1999 E3 show, but the game was not to appear again in the news until around E3 2000, when developer Silicon Knights became an exclusive Nintendo second-party and the PSX incarnation came to an end. Speculation immediately flared up around the possibility that the game could end up on a Nintendo system. Company comments certainly didn't dampen the talk, with SK president Denis Dyack stating that Too Human would not appear on N64 or any Sony system, but also that his company simply does not cancel games. Consequently, we've known for a long time that Too Human would show up on GameCube in one form or another, and despite a brief appearance at Space World 2000, that's still pretty much all we know.

Too Human's GameCube debut was a short, pre-rendered clip showing some futuristic, Japanese-style characters. The handful of screenshots available from the clip are quite cryptic; for all we know, the video shown could be leftover from the Playstation version (which was said to include over an hour of FMV cutscenes), or it could be already transferred into real-time on the GC hardware. There weren't any Silicon Knights employees at Space World to answer questions or offer details on the video shown. The gist of all this, basically, is that the GameCube version of Too Human remains very much a mystery, and probably won't be revealed further until E3 2001.

We do, however, know some stuff about the Playstation version of the game, and at least some of it should end up being relevant to the game you damn well know you're going to buy for GameCube. Too Human was basically an action game with RPG elements, or as some would say, an adventure game. You played the role of a cop in the future who is seeking vengeance for his slain partner. As you progress through the game, you got the opportunity to add cybernetic enhancements to your body. The parts you chose dictated the style of gameplay; for instance, you could become a stealthy sniper with cybernetic eyes, or a Rambo-type warrior with strength upgrades and bigger guns. As usual with Silicon Knights games, there were many moral themes contained in the game...supposedly, the ending would change depending on how human you still were at the end. So, you'd also have to factor in whether or not this new speed enhancement is worth losing another piece of your humanity. Besides the aforementioned bit about being a cop, and the fact that this future involves mega-corporations and other such stuff, the story was kept secret from the media and public. However, Dyack has said that the story was written in full before development ever started, and it has not changed ever since.

Many people consider Too Human to be a major landmark in Nintendo's expansion into the older age demographic. Whether or not the game lives up to all the massive expectations...well, unfortunately, we'll just have to wait for E3. Expect a flood of new information and some sort of demo at that time.
