Midway Arcade Treasures 2

by Jon Lindemann - September 8, 2004, 6:57 pm EDT

Midway takes us on another trip down Read-Only Memory lane.

Midway looks to ride the wave of gaming nostalgia once again with Midway Arcade Treasures 2. This new compilation gives us 20 more classic arcade games, with a heavy emphasis on fighting games, sequels and shoot'em-ups. Here's the game lineup:

A.P.B. (1987) - An overhead driving game in which you're a police officer chasing down criminals to meet an arrest quota, and snagging doughnuts for extra time.

Arch-Rivals (1989) - A predecessor to NBA Jam, this one-on-one, no-fouls basketball title lets you literally beat down your opponents.

Championship Sprint (1986) - An overhead racing game that pits you against three other racecars in a bid for prize money and vehicle upgrades.

Cyberball 2072 (1988) - Mechanized football in which the goal is to score before the ball explodes.

Gauntlet II (1986) - A sequel to the classic dungeon hack'n'slash that pits an Elf, Wizard, Valkyrie and Warrior against endless hordes of monsters.

Hard Drivin' (1986) - An early 3-D stunt driving game featuring a famous 360-degree loop.

Kozmik Krooz'r (1982) - A shooter in which you guide Kapt. Krooz'r into the tractor beam of his mothership, destroying enemies along the way.

Mortal Kombat II (1993) - This sequel to the controversial fighter includes more characters and fatalities, and also introduces Babalities and Friendship special moves.

Mortal Kombat 3 (1995) - The blood-soaked fighting series continues, this time with fourteen regular characters and the hidden character Smoke.

NARC (1988) - Take the war on drugs to a whole new level in this side-scrolling shoot'em-up that pits you against drug dealers, junkies and kingpins.

Pit-Fighter (1990) - An underground fighting game that features one of the first uses of entirely digitized characters.

Primal Rage (1994) - An unusual fighter in which you choose from seven different dinosaurs battling to avoid extinction.

Rampage World Tour (1997) - Giant monsters Ralph, Lizzie and George take their destructive act on the road, letting players eat people and destroy cities all over the world.

Spy Hunter II (1987) - This two-player cooperative sequel replaces the original's overhead view with a 3-D behind-the-car view, while still letting players blast baddies and power-up their vehicle.

Timber (1984) - Chop down as many trees as possible while racing against time, and dodging enemies and obstacles.

Total Carnage (1991) - A dual-joystick, top-scrolling, blast-a-thon that pits players against the diabolical forces of General Akhboob.

Wacko (1983) - Kapt. Krooz'r is back, and this time he's faced with the daunting task of destroying all the space monsters on each level.

Wizard of Wor (1981) - A seminal maze game in which players must shoot all monsters to advance to the next board, all the while watching out for the deadly Wizard of Wor and his Worluks.

Xenophobe (1987) - A unique, side-scrolling, shoot'em-up that lets three players battle at once by splitting the screen into a top, middle and bottom section. The goal is to clear a space station of rampaging aliens using futuristic weapons.

Xybots (1987) - Guide a soldier through 3-D mazes while shooting robots, battling bosses, and powering-up your abilities.

In addition to the games, you'll get DVD-style extra content; for example, the original Arcade Treasures included game histories and interviews with the game creators. The first edition cut some corners in this department, so hopefully they'll put more work into this area the second time around.

It's interesting to note that the game roster has been tweaked a bit since it was first announced. Kozmik Krooz'r and Wacko took the place of Stun Runner and Steel Talons, and Mortal Kombat was removed entirely and added to the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Deception as an unlockable bonus.

While the removal of these three titles was a major downgrade (Mortal Kombat in particular), Midway Arcade Treasures 2 still promises to be a great value with a suggested retail price of $19.99. Those of you looking for a trip back to the arcades of the 80's and 90's won't be disappointed. Midway has your craving covered, and you can leave those quarters at home this time!
