Motor Trend: Lotus Challenge

by Mike Hrusecky - December 5, 2002, 12:01 am EST

Xicat Interactive and Kuju Entertainment have ambitious goals to separate Lotus Challenge from the rest of the racing games on the GameCube and other platforms.

Lotus Challenge, published by Xicat Interactive and developed by Kuju Entertainment, features licensed vehicles from a famous British sports car company called Lotus. Included are the Esprit (from James Bond) and the Lotus 7 (from the TV series The Prisoner), as well as all of the new models, such as the Elise and 340R, vintage classics, F1 Lotus Racing vehicles, and concept cars.

Lotus Challenge will utilize lighting and weather effects (rain, storm, snow, fog, dirt, mud) and realistic damage modeling at a full 60 frames per second. The game also contains a soundtrack provided by electronica/breakbeat artist Hybrid.

Each course is set across a variety of landscapes and tracks, including London (Park Lane, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, St James Park, and Buckingham Palace), Hethel (the Lotus test track), Tokyo Rainbow Bridge, Minato-ku, the Tokyo Bay Tunnel, Arizona Speedway, and Jupiter Beach Raceway in Florida.

There are a range of challenges for players, from lapping courses the fastest to completing trials and missions. The story mode mixes gaming styles with players choosing different characters, each with a different path through the game. Players will be able to drive through an Italian Alps hill climb, around Hollywood film sets, take part in a tire commercial on an Oil Rig, or even race through rush-hour traffic.

Finally, the multiplayer options are spread across Championships or decided on a single race. Specific modes and challenges will result in hidden tracks or cars being unlocked and available for play in all other modes. Once a particular section of the game is finished, players will be able to replay it in a faster car, thrashing down lap times in single- or multi-player sessions.

Lotus Challenge is scheduled for the GameCube in March of 2003.
