Magical Vacation

by Zosha Arushan - June 19, 2001, 8:37 pm EDT

From the makers of Seiken Densetsu and Front Mission comes an entirely new AGB adventure...

Some very interesting new information on Magical Vacation has been confirmed on EAGB. Despite what the screens may have you think, both parties will be making moves at the same time--in other words, it is in Real Time, not unlike Zelda or PSO. The report goes on to reiterate the "communication" aspects of the game, stating that there will be side quests made just for multiple players. The phrasing also suggests that the game will not be limited to two players.

Could this be the "Phantasy Star On-the-road" for handheld gamers? We'll have to wait and see, but this continuous statement of a "communication game" seems to go along perfectly with the Mobile Adapter. PGC will have more info as it comes up.

Despite the strange (read: "Fruity") name, the story behind Magical Vacation is rather interesting. When a group of monsters attacks a magician's school, the students quickly retreat to a dimension known as the "Plain of Light". Seeking the power to defeat the evil, the band of apprentices travel this mystical world gaining the wisdom and knowledge that will allow them to return to their world triumphantly.

An RPG by the newly formed development house, Brownie Brown, it is one of the many solutions Nintendo is aiming for in filling the RPG gap. As it has been stated in our Developer's Profile, the founders of BB are veterans of Squaresoft and are also responsible for the legendary Seiken Densetsu series (SD1 was released in North America as Final Fantasy Adventure & SD2 as Secret of Mana). Kameoka Shinichi was the man who created the Character designs in both SD2 and 3 while Kouji Tsuda was the graphics designer in SD3 and Front Mission.

Even though the game has been termed "RPG" by the press, Nintendo maintains that it is a "Communications Game". What this means is not entirely certain. Looking at new screens of the upcoming title, it appears the game will indeed be turn-based. (Many thanks to Consoles France for the screens!) There is also a rumour that the game may include the multiplayer elements so enjoyed in the SD series. Taking two other friends on an AGB adventure? We can only hope it will allow for the 3 players/1 cart gameplay.

The game designers have stated that there will be "international versions" available sometime after the Japanese launch. This should mean, of course that North American gamers will get to enjoy this unique and graphically beautiful title.
