Rugrats is one of Nickelodeon's most popular cartoons, as children everywhere cannot seem to get enough of the adventures of Tommy, Chuckie and Angelica and the rest of the diaper-wearing crew. Lucky for these fans, THQ will be bringing the Rugrats to GameCube and Game Boy Advance. THQ also plans to make Nintendo games from other Nickelodeon franchises, SpongeBob SquarePants and Rocket Power.
Apparently, THQ views the GameCube as a "kiddie system" which make the Rugrats an almost obvious choice for THQ to cut its teeth with. In an interview with IGNCube, THQ's vice president of product development Michael Rubinelli remarked:
"I think that we (THQ) feel like that caters to a little bit of a younger crowd. With that said, we obviously have a lot of products that work towards that audience."
Shortly after the interview, THQ confirmed that it was preparing a Rugrats game for GameCube and Game Boy Advance. The premise, genre and name of the Rugrats games are unknown at this point but you can expect it to be all around family-fare and geared towards younger gamers.
The Rugrats franchise is anything but a new property for THQ, who already have numerous Rugrats games under its belt. Previous Rugrats titles from THQ include… Rugrats for Game Boy, Rugrats: Time Travellers and Rugrats: Totally Angelica for Game Boy Color Rugrats Scavenger Hunt for N64, PSX had Rugrats Search for Reptar, Rugrats Studio Tour as well as Totally Angelica. Finally, THQ also made Rugrats in Paris: The Movie for GBC, PSX and N64. (Whew!)
Each one of these games was different; some have been simple platformers while others have presented an emphasis on mini-games. All of the games however, have been quite true to the series and just about as popular as the Rugrats show itself. Therefore, THQ developing new Rugrats for both GBA and GC shouldn't be all that surprising.
Whether or not the games will be ports of the same game or different titles altogether is unknown. With Rugrats games on both GameCube and Game Boy Advance, there is also the possibility that the games may interact in some way.
Recently, Nickolodeon announced that there will be another Rugrats feature film, one that may involve a crossover with another Nickolodeon franchise, Wild Thornberries. Because the GBA/GC Rugrats games may manifest themselves around the same time as the movie, it's possible they will be based on the flick. If the games are not connected to the film, it's likely THQ will produce additional Rugrats titles associated with the movie.
Whatever form the games take, we'll keep you posted on their development.
