Advance Wars

by David Trammell - September 19, 2001, 5:49 pm EDT

Is it possible? Has someone finally found something negative to say about Advance Wars?

The answer is... no. It's not possible, because there is nothing wrong with this game. In fact, that's a serious understatement. I don't intend to go into that much depth here since you can just read Zosha's Review for that, but I did want to mention a few things that she didn't.

First of all, I wouldn't list the games challenge as a con (as Zosha did in her review). There are a couple of difficult maps in the campaign mode(especially the last one), but most people should be able to pull through, even if it takes them a second or third attempt. Personally, I made mostly A ranks with a few B ranks and just one S rank throughout the campaign mode. That said, I hear the War Room can be very difficult; I haven't started on that yet. Additionally, there is a more difficult version of the campaign mode that increases your enemies number of units per battle (and maybe some other stuff). That's why I think the challenge is just about perfect. It covers a broad range so that everyone can enjoy the game.

The only other thing I wanted to emphasize is that the control scheme is nearly perfect. For example, on your turn you can press the L button to locate any units that you have yet to use on that turn. If you hold B on the map screen, all units become transparent so that you can look at just the terrain without any thing cluttering it up. You can press A or B on any unit to see a visual representation of its current movement range and attack range. You can even turn off the battle animations making your wars much faster (though less dramatic). These features are things that a lesser developer could have easily left out, but not Intelligent Systems.

This game is so good that I've actually begun bringing my Game Boy Advance to college with me. Yes... I actually play this game after lunch, between classes and in front of normal people (who think I'm slightly crazy as a result). I don't really care though. I think they're slightly crazy for not joining me.

Unless you just hate strategy games, you need to pick this game up immediately. Even if you don't like strategy games, this one may just convert you. Best of all, since it's a Nintendo first party title, it only cost 30 bucks at your local Wal-Mart. Don't deprive yourself of this game any longer. Now get outta here, and go get it!
