Buckshot

NWR tried out Innex’s light gun peripheral shell. The pumping reload action was sweet.

Along with the 3-in-1 Virtual Retro Adapter, TYP and I also got a chance to try out Innex’s new light gun peripheral, the Buckshot.

Players will need to plug a Wii Remote into the Buckshot to operate it. The guns they had on display came in three colors, red, black, and white. When I picked one up I was pleasantly surprised to find they had a nice heft to them. It felt well-made and looked pretty cool. Instead of having to also connect a nunchuck such as with the Wii Zapper, the Buckshot already has its own analog stick and C and Z buttons.

The one game they had available to try with the light gun was House of the Dead: Overkill. The gun’s trigger acted as the A button and made a very nice click when pressing on it. Reloading was accomplished by pulling the handgrip back and forth. Using pump action to reload was awesome and made me feel like I was playing the game on an arcade cabinet. I had no problem with aiming the Wii Remote while it was inside the gun shell.

Unfortunately, there were no other games to try out. I really wanted to see if I could play a game such as House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return and use the gun sight to properly aim.

The Buckshot will retail for 29.99 and will be available in mid June. The game worked very nicely with House of the Dead: Overkill, but its value will be decided on how well it works with the rest of Wii’s shooter line-up.

Are there any photos/media to supplement this?

I'll get a picture of the gun up later. And if you really want some video of someone playing it I'll get it. Do you want it?

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 04, 2009

Definitely would appreciate it.

Pump-action? Man this sounds awesome.

7.9 BUMP ON THE RICHTER SCALE

It works well with Overkill? Fuck it, I'm buying this.

Lead-based Plastic makers, this is how you announce your Wii products.

Good content on the video.  It showed me how easy it is to use and the various parts of the model.  It's really acting like a Classic Controller, isn't it?

Innex looks to be the HVS of plastic Wii guns!

That looks surprisingly not horrible.  ;D

I'll wait for Pro's review.

Official press release.  Looks like it's bound for production.

Oh lol, mid June has already passed, and this product's not out yet.

How did the trigger work?  Does it physically push/pull the buttons on the Remote, or does the whole unit act like a Classic Controller, making the gun trigger an electronic button?

I got the review unit today and I'm not sold on it considering the final MSRP price is $34.99. The trigger and pump action are manual levers. To use the B button it's the gun trigger, the A button is the pump action (the official PR got these two mixed up, even the one included with the review unit). I dislike the built in analog stick and the Wii Remote compartment of the Buckshot has this weird chemical odor. I played a few rounds of HOTD:O and I thought it was okay at best. I'm going to do an play test gauntlet with HOTD:O, HOTD: 2 and 3, Link's Crossbow Training, Ghost Squad, RE:UC and Medal Of Honor: Heroes 2 before assigning the final scores for the peripheral review.

As a treat I'll also try to shoot a extensive video of the controller showing off the manual levers and such (how they got the pump to hit the A button is interesting) and include it in the review or something. I definitely want to take some pictures such as a size comparison with the official Nintendo Zapper.

Righteous.  Now that I know the trigger is a mechanical method, I'll pass on this product.  The priciness seems to come from its partial Nunchuk functionality.

My CTA SureShot rifle was the same price at the beginning of the year, it has a nice stock and the sights are nice to look thru.  But the loooong mechanical trigger system is very tiring (cramping, actually) for fast games like House of the Dead (hell, regular pistol shells are tiring for that series).  Ghost Squad enemies usually die in one hit, so it's way more comfy to play.

Ahh the weight of the buckshot does get tiring (most of the weight distribution is at the end due to where you put in the Wii Remote) and so does the spring loaded trigger and pump. My issue biggest issue is how the Wii remote is housed since there are no +, -, or home buttons on the gun so you have to open the Wii Remote compartment  in order to access those buttons to pause the game which is terrible.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 12, 2009

OUCH Ouch ouch

Not good, Komodo.

NinGurl69 *hugglesAugust 19, 2009

I opened up my CTA Digital SureShot rifle last night, trying to see if there's anything I could improve.  I noticed the trigger pull could've been a lot smoother if the shaft shared the same axis as the trigger; as it is, the shaft is connected the corner of the internal trigger plate, causing the plate to torque and rub against the plastic that houses it.  As for the main spring, I tried switching it with smaller ballpoint pen springs, but they didn't provide enough force to quickly return the trigger to the starting position.  Last, I removed a cover plate at the tip of the barrel, which should improve the IR Camera's field of view a little bit; the default housing of the Remote sticks out past the front of the Remote, and that obstructs the Remote's view too much in my opinion.  Aside from that, there's nothing I could structurally improve; the design was already hindered because it's a modification of CTA's earlier Buzz Shotgun rifle (which had some serious problems due to designers not understanding how the Remote worked in the first place).  If they restarted from scratch I'm sure they could've achieved a more elegant product.

I'll just go ahead and say

CTA Digital SureShot Rifle  >>  Komodo Buckshot (don't buy it! it phails!)

Both apparently have tiring spring loaded triggers, and that's where the similarities end.

The SureShot's design allows the use of a Nunchuk with access to C and Z buttons, and all the buttons on the Remote are exposed and accessible.  The butt stock is a nice feature that no other gun shell on the market provides (until the new Wii Deer Hunting game comes out, comes with its own orange shotgun) and helps improve aiming stability.  The ring-shaped sight on the SureShot also feels nice to look thru and overall the unit aims very very well in properly calibrated games.  But because the trigger is tiring, I won't recommend it for trigger happy situations; I'll need to buy the Assault Rifle in HotD Overkill before I can continue on with Director's Cut mode comfortably.

I'm going to write my review soon and will put in some pictures. I don't have an extensive set of Wii gun shells so I only have the Zapper as comparison. I ended up performing in games better if I used Nintendo's peripheral rather than the Buckshot.

The 3rd party Wii Plastic market is a disappointment as a whole.  It takes at least 3 tries for most companies to improve knock-offs to a stage where I can take interest in the product.
