Melee Too Much for E

Will Super Smash Bros. Melee be rated Teen? It looks that way...

Despite its violent nature, the original Smash Bros. on N64 got by with an E (Everyone) rating from the Electronic Software Ratings Board, or ESRB.

Thanks to tips from readers "Amir" and "Willis", we've learned that Nintendo's official website lists the new SSB Melee as being rated T for Teen. The content descriptors are "Comic Mischief" and "Animated Violence".

It's hard to say why the ESRB would allow the original to have an E rating and not the sequel, except perhaps that some characters in Melee actually look like real people thanks to the GameCube's graphic prowess.

There are currently no major game retailers enforcing the Teen ratings (Mature is a different story), so this isn't likely to keep young people from buying the game. Still, it's quite interesting; this will be one of the first and very few Nintendo-published games to receive a non-E rating.
