Sega on Sega

Sega speaks in tones slightly less cryptic than usual.

Videogames.com have landed an interview with Charles Bellfield, vice president of marketing and corporate communications at Sega of America. While talking about Sega's restructuring and moving to "platform agnostic" status, he makes several comments of note. One such comment talked about which consoles would be heading to which consoles:

"We will look at content specifically targeted at consumer audiences through a particular platform. For example, Sonic on a Nintendo device obviously makes sense. The Virtua Fighter series, which is a mainstream fighting game, makes sense on a platform that is going to have a big installed base. We will look at it title by title, license by license, franchise by franchise, character by character, and by platform. Obviously, if you're a platform company today, talking to Sega is probably very high on your agenda. We're looking across the board, but we're going to make sure that those decisions are very strategic. We are not denying that we're in conversation with companies regarding exclusive or nonexclusive content."

Could "Sonic on a Nintendo device" be a possible allusion that Sonic for NGC could happen? We can only hope for now. Another exciting statement from Bellfield concerns some of the negative attention Sega's received since its monumental announcements:

"Look at the potential of what Sega's content can do and look at our position. I saw some of John Riccitiello's [president and CEO of EA] comments, comparing us to GM relative to his BMW. In terms of his comments, BMW is in significant financial problems at this moment, and I wouldn't do a comparison like that if I were he. This GM is very nimble and we will continue to reform ourselves. We have the library and content. What you're going to be seeing very soon--I can't confirm on what platform or anything--is Sega Sports NFL 2K series going head-to-head with a Madden game on the same platform."

While we're getting excited about Sonic & ChuChu Rocket, it's hard to ignore Sega's fantastic sports games (we're hoping that Sega has a very "platform generous" position w/these titles). It's gonna get nuts folks.
