The next Smash Bros. is getting some help from outside Nintendo.

Namco Bandai Games and Namco Bandai Studio will be working as developers of the next entry in the Smash Bros. series.

Masahiro Sakurai will be heading the project and will be joined by Namco employees Masaya Kobayashi, acting as producer, and Yoshito Higuchi, acting as director.

At the conclusion of the Japanese Nintendo Direct presentation, Sakurai and Kobayashi delivered personal messages regarding the collaboration.

Makes sense to me, bring in outside help to speed up development time.  Hopefully this means a winter 2013 launch date and maybe a few new Namco characters. :)

New Challenger Approaches - Pacman

and for the next game they release: Pokemon x Digimon

LOZman June 22, 2012

All I can say is that they better not screw up the game. What Namco characters would fit best though?

geo June 22, 2012

I'm ok with pac-man, especially as their new 'retro' character (game & watch, R.O.B), but there isn't much else in the namco universe I want in my smash brothers.  Anything more and it teeters closer to a nintendo vs. game.  I dunno.

Ymeegod June 22, 2012

Pacman would be an ideal fit, Namco also has rights to the Naruto and One Peice cartoon series so there's plenty of characters from them to chose from.

Then you have Tekken series, I would chose from the animal types like Kuma, Panda, or Roger.

And finally you have gundam, might not appeal to Amercians but Japanese sure do love fighting robots.

or battle of the balls, pink vs yellow

red14 June 22, 2012

HELL yeah! If that isn't gonna be the best Smash Bros. game, I don't know what will be! I can't think of anyone better to help work on it than Namco!

...I can't help but wonder what Ubisoft would do with a Smash Bros. game.... huh, I'd check it out at least. Mario gettin Rayman punched!!! Dammit now I really want it to happen! XD

Dan Laser June 22, 2012

How about some Katamari, isn't that Namco!? Playable Prince? A Katamari-themed level could be awesome, with the King of Cosmos showing up and spewing rainbows and commentary...

quote05 June 22, 2012

Well namco has dig dug and mr driller that would fit well into smash bros. I would like to see some very obscure characters such as reiji from namco x capcom.

Thaneros June 22, 2012

Better have some Tekken characters in the next one! Jin vs Kirby!

Oblivion June 22, 2012

Hopefully we'll get Dark Souls characters. :)

KOS-MOS seems like an obvious choice given Monolith Software's ties to Namco.

This.
Not mention Namco Bandai also has Project X Zone in development.

nickmitch June 22, 2012

Let's not turn this in to Nintendo vs Namco, guys. One or two characters is best.

Racht June 22, 2012

Lloyd Irving, no? He was in two Tales games on two separate Nintendo consoles. I figure that he's a shoe-in for Smash.

Nemo June 22, 2012

Dream matchup: Link vs. Nightmare.

That already happened almost 10 years ago. Stop living in the past, man!

Very interesting... Well with all the fighting games Namco puts out, I trust Sakurai and these guys will make the characters fairly balanced. So some people from Sora and a team from Namco huh, we'll see.
