SquareEnix Remakes Final Fantasy IV in 3D

Another classic Final Fantasy gets the 3D treatment on Nintendo DS.

With the success of Final Fantasy III on DS, it's no surprise that Square Enix is making another 3D remake of this tremendously popular series. The company has chosen Final Fantasy IV for the next remake, and this game should be much more familiar to fans around the world. Originally released on the Super NES/Famicom, the English version was called Final Fantasy II.

The story revolves around the Dark Knight Cecil, who commands a fleet of airships called the Red Wings and is searching the world for powerful crystals to increase the strength of his empire. His girlfriend Rosa is encouraging him to turn away from aggression and settle down with her. Eventually, Cecil will be betrayed by his own king and undergo a luminous transformation...

Famitsu gives few details on the remake except to say that Square Enix is "adding depth to the magnificent story" and "appending new events and decisions". Of course, the graphics look very much like last year's Final Fantasy III remake, with fully 3D characters and environments.

We should have more information on this game soon, as the Square Enix public event is very close to starting in Japan.

After playing FF3 DS I'm looking forward to this. I hope Jobs make a return.

I don't think that's going to happen in FFIV, that would require completely revamping the gameplay. Jobs did make a return in FFV, which has already been remade for the GBA (though so have FFIV and FFVI).

CericMay 09, 2007

I have to look into FFV then.

LouieturkeyMay 09, 2007

You might want to wait then. It seems inevitable that they will remake V and VI in 3D as well. Maybe they'll even try to port VII, VIII & IX to the DS as well.

Two things...

A. I'm kinda iffy about Cecil's new look...
B. Now I'm pissed that I got FF4 Advance since this is coming out.

CericMay 09, 2007

I enjoyed the 3Dness and art style for FF3 DS so I will probably wait.

Edit: Boo. Too Macho Girly man.

I'll wait for the reviews. FF3's reviews didn't sound nice so I avoided the game.

i think this is still my favorate final fantasy. i did get the game boy version, still loved it. will get the 3d version too, this way i can have either the nostalgic 2d game, or a newer, prettier one.

oh and KDR, FF3 was good. It is a classic oldschool RPG. fun, with a bit of grinding, and unforgiving of dying. =)

the difference i'm looking forward to, really, is the combat system in FF4 is better, with the staggard initiative.

CericMay 09, 2007

So far I think FF3 DS is really easy. No one has lasted more then 2 rounds with my team. I'm at the last area and the only reason I haven't gone and finished up is because I want to see what the jobs who have to wait till the end of the game to get are like. (I also got all the upper level summons.)

That sure doesn't sound good.

Best news I've heard in months, FFIV (FF2) is my favorite Final Fantasy game, not to mention one of my overall favorites.

that Baby guyMay 09, 2007

FFVI was my favorite, and I kind of wish they'd just skip to it, in case it becomes too outdated in the RPG world, though I hope that never occurs. At first, I thought that this might be a "remake" like how they remade I+II for the PSP, which is basically sprite based still. And not the pretty looking sprites, either.

Anyways, I hope that they'll be able to muster up everyone who owns some of the rights with Chrono Trigger and hope on that with a pretty remake. That would make me excited.

It is pretty odd, I know about everyone loves FFVI (FF3 in US) but I never could get into it. FF2 (US) is still my favorite out of the series, maybe it is nostalgia or something, but even now I love it.

That would be really cool as well.

Wow I didn't really see this coming, although I probably should have. As Square-Enix definitely likes to cash in on their previous success. I think it's inevitable that Final Fantasy 5 and 6 will now also be remade in 3-D in the next year or two and released on the DS.

I don't see that as a bad thing either. I mean, I was really excited when they released FF 4 - 6 on the GBA and bought them all. And I also picked up FF 3 on the DS. They're all great games and they're all worth the money. Hopefully Square will be adding more than just the upgraded visuals to really persuade people who already picked up the GBA versions to go back and buy the upgraded DS versions.

This also leads to the inevitable question.... After they remake 4 - 6, would they actually consider remaking or re-releasing FF 7 on the DS? It would definitely be a huge seller. But I'll be alright even if they don't remake it. At this point I wouldn't mind if they left that series alone for awhile.

Oh yeah ... and we can't forget about Chrono Trigger. I sent that question into the mailbag here at PGC / NWR a few months back. I would have a very hard time believing Square wouldn't be interested in re-releasing Chrono Trigger in some format. Either through the dying GBA, the DS, or a less likely option over to the VC.

Hahaha ..... no.

For some reason, every once in awhile when I go to reply to a topic, I hit reply and it doesn't bring up the text box. And instead just posts a blank message for me. I don't know if it's a rare issue with the site, the web browser (Fire Fox) or what? But it has happened a few times before.

Anyways, I was in the middle of editing my post, when I got an important phone call and was away from the computer for almost an hour.

My thoughts are above ^

Well, IIRC, an SE employee said they would love to re-release CT in some way, but unless they can gather up the rights to it, they won't be able to. In the interview, he guessed there was about a 50/50 chance of us seeing it again.
