DrinkBox’s zany Metroid-like platformer hits Wii U this spring and it looks rad.

Having already beaten Guacamelee on PlayStation 3 and Vita, I was excited to play the upcoming expanded Wii U version dubbed Super Turbo Championship Edition at PAX East 2014. For those unfamiliar, Guacamelee is a side-scrolling brawler with some Metroid elements, specifically using acquired skills to access previously blocked areas. You play as agave farmer Juan, who is killed when trying to defend El Presidente’s daughter when she is kidnapped by evil skeleton Carlos Calaca. Miraculously, Juan is resurrected as an ass-kicking luchador who gains powers by destroying oddly familiar “Choozo” statues scattered throughout the land. Juan can also move between the worlds of the living and dead at the press of a button. Accomplishing tasks in one may influence the geography of the other and so on and so forth. A colorful cast of villains and an iconic art style make Guacamelee engaging and funny. I like it a lot.

The Super Turbo Championship Edition adds all the DLC (mostly costumes), some new enemy types, and a whole bunch of new content, headlined by a brand-new dungeon ruled by a brand-new boss: the king of the skeleton army. Juan also gets a new power: a temporary stat boost triggered by clicking both analog sticks. His look changes to that of an Aztec god, and he pummels enemies with wild abandon for a set amount of time. According to DrinkBox, there is new content peppered throughout the entire game, making it sort of like a director’s cut of the original (though none of the content was necessarily axed from the original game; just newly created for the expanded version).

On the Wii U, Guacamelee looks great, displaying at 1080p on the system. The controls are very responsive, too. The GamePad can display the area map (always handy) or be used for Off-TV Play. A second player can use the Pro Controller for local co-op. Single-players can also use the Pro Controller instead of the GamePad if they prefer. I’m pretty excited that Guacamelee will be available to Nintendo gamers who haven’t necessarily experienced it yet because I’m a big fan. Keep an eye out, muchachos.

Guacamelee: Super Turbo Championship Edition is coming out on Wii U in the spring.
