Two of the biggest puzzle franchises in gaming collide.

There is no question that Puyo Puyo and Tetris are some of the most popular puzzle franchises around the globe. The addictive nature of both titles have spawned numerous sequels and iterations throughout the past two decades across several platforms. Thanks to Sega, fans will be able to experience both games simultaneously with the release of Puyo Puyo Tetris. At the Tokyo Game Show, Sega offered demos of both the home console version via the PlayStation 3 and the handheld version on the Nintendo 3DS.

The demo was fairly simple and allows players to choose to play either Puyo Puyo or Tetris. The game played in a versus-like fashion with each game adhering to their own rules. Both a Tetris side and Puyo Puyo side are shown on the screen simultaneously. With Tetris, eliminating lines sends the pieces in the form of puyos to the Puyo Puyo side of things, while matching four puyos will send an equivalent number of eliminated pieces to the Tetris side.

In my time playing the 3DS version at the show, I only had a chance to play Tetris. This is classic Tetris with a few familiar additions, such as the ability to see where your block will land before placing it below. Players can also move the blocks in the desired position instantly by pressing up on the Circle Pad or D-Pad and also have the ability to hold pieces for later use.

The visual aesthetics of the game borrow heavily from the Puyo Puyo series, offering bright, cheery colors and that are typically associated with Puyo Puyo. It all fits very nicely together, and having both series in the same game makes sense in a quirky kind of way. While the final version of the game features a “Swap Mode” that shifts players between playing both Tetris and Puyo Puyo, the mode was not available in this version of the demo. Puyo Puyo Tetris is scheduled for release on 3DS and Wii U in Japan next year.
