Wave Race: Blue Storm

Don't believe the anti-hype! This game rocks!

First of all, this game is 10x more beautiful than it looks in videos and screenshots. Screenshots just don't capture the animation of the water and videos don't capture the clarity of the visuals. When you see this game for the first time in person (especially certain levels), your jaw will drop. The choice of colors for backgrounds is also much more impressive on your TV (unless you have a bad TV). The look definitely isn't realistic, but it's a very nice look indeed. The true star of this game is the water though. Next on the agenda: the controls.

The controls are just fine. However, they are different from the original game. My advice to you is to choose the first rider and don't modify his engine speed or turning while you adjust to the new handling of the game. Just remember that you're going to have to use the L and R buttons a lot while turning; it's not really possible to navigate with the stick alone anymore. This isn't a bad thing at all, it's just different. To be honest, I felt like I was more in control of my craft once I got used to it.

Finally, the levels are not rehashed. Only one level is taken from the first game out of 18. Some levels have a similar theme (both games have an "ice" level for example), but the track layout is different. There are seven different themes in the game and most themes have three track layouts for a total of 18 tracks. Some more visual variety would have been nice, but the track variety is definitely there. Furthermore, for each difficulty mode, the buoy placement is changed and of course, you never know what the waves are going to be doing because the weather condition for each race is randomly generated a few days before it (in the championship mode anyway).

Wave Race: BS is a fine successor to the original. If you liked the old one, you'd be crazy not to get this game.
