Extreme Frogger?!

Brainchild of famously enthusiastic, dreadlock-sporting producer Tak Fujii, Frogger 3D is his envisioning of an "extreme" version of Frogger. As such, it's a very strange re-imagining of the arcade classic that manages to retain the classic gameplay. In general, you have to navigate Frogger through a deadly crowded field to the end goal.

There were ten worlds on display at E3, including a tank battlefield, a level where playing cards fly down, pushing Frogger back to the beginning, and a stage with opening and closing doors. Another placed your frog on the top of a military jet where you had to dodge incoming missiles before jumping off the edge at the right time to land on another passing jet. Extreme enough for you?

It seems the designers had fun coming up with ways to kill the poor frogs. In a city level, players have to avoid rats while hopping across rooftops. Rats come in from any of the four directions, and whenever one manages to catch your frog, an entire swarm arrives to feed on the carcass. Similarly, in other levels, the frog is in danger of being brutally sliced, flattened, or blown up.

Some stages include a friend frog. Your frog can hop on the friend frog's back, which can protect him for a limited time. However, the friend frog likes to eat, and getting too close to food may throw both frogs into even bigger danger.

There are several renditions of the classic traffic-crossing gameplay as well. One starts off with classic traffic-crossing gameplay, but all of the cars spontaneously change direction perpendicularly. The final stage was ridiculous. In essence, it was the classic Frogger level, but wrapped into the inside of a cylinder. The cylinder meanwhile rotated in 3D, making it very hard to see where you were going, and throwing off your directional sense.

Frogger 3D's music is pretty epic for such a game, but the graphics are only passable, as you can see from the footage below.

Frogger 3D is a strange, but oddly appropriate upgrade to the Frogger gameplay. I do wonder about the lasting appeal of such a game, but if you are a real fan of Frogger, check out the game this fall.
