Raise up to three cute puppies! Play with them, teach them tricks, or let them play with a friend's puppies via the wireless connection! Puppies respond to your voice using the DS's microphone.

There's also a Bark Mode; it's like a sleep mode, but it automatically trades gifts and passes along recorded voice messages between Nintendogs owners.

There are three versions of the game with different breeds at the start of each version (others can be unlocked in time or via Bark Mode). Here are the US breed listings:

Lab & Friends: Labrador retriever, miniature schnauzer, toy poodle, Pembroke Welsh corgi, miniature pinscher and shiba inu

Chihuahua & Friends: Chihuahua, German shepherd, boxer, cavalier King Charles spaniel, Yorkshire terrier and Shetland sheepdog

Dachshund & Friends: Miniature dachshund, golden retriever, beagle, pug, Siberian husky and Shih Tzu
