Upgrading the Master Sword
« on: July 09, 2004, 07:51:56 PM »
Of all of the swords in the Zelda games, my favorite by far was the Golden Sword from ALttP.  I enjoyed the idea of upgrading your sword, and that sword was probably better than any other sword in the series.  The power was on par with the Great Fairy Sword, yet you could use it with one hand, it shot beams of energy out, albeit very weak ones, and you could still use a shield with it.

Does anyone else like the idea of being able to upgrade the Master Sword?  It wouldn't necessarily have to conflict with the plot; it could be an extra option and in the "official" story, Link wouldn't have done the upgrade.  But it could be there for people who wanted the option.

The Master Sword has done its duty flawlessly for the whole series.  Why fix something that's not broken?  Why make better something that's the best?  No need to change the Master Sword, that's what the other swords are for.  However...yes, there is always a however...it could be a little stronger and shoot beams when you have full life...other than that, no changes necessary(those aren't even necessary).

I believe it was "restored" rather than "upgraded."

IIRC, there was no Master Sword in LttP.

First, I'm not "fixing" anything, the Master Sword was upgraded in ALttP and it is not a change for the series.

Also, play ALttP again if you don't believe that it had the Master Sword.  I played through it last week, and it does have the Master Sword.

The Wind Waker did not truly upgrade the Master Sword.  It took a very weak version of the Master Sword and brought it to the normal level.  If you had truly upgraded the Master Sword in the Wind Waker, it would be 4 times as strong.

Come on, ALttP!  The game that started a legend within a legend!  Of course, the Master Sword was in it, AiAi!

Well the Master Sword was called the Magic Sword in previous games... I just assumed that it was a name change and not necessarily a different sword.

And judging by Link's shield(s), he was a Christian Crusader searching for the Holy Grail along with the Brave Sir Robin.

Yes, well... He wasn't as pathetic as Sir Robin =).

Bravely bold Sir Robin, rode forth to Camelot.
He was not afraid to die, O Brave Sir Robin.
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways.
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Robin!

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken.
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away,
And his limbs all hacked and mangle, brave Sir Robin!

His head smashed in and his heart but out,
And his lover removed and his bowels unplugged,
And his nostrills raped and his bottom burned of,
And his....

Yes, I ended it a word early...

"He bravely ran away, away!"

Given the current theology in the Zelda games, it is a bit odd that Link carried a Crucifix-bearing shield in the first title, but that's just hind-sight now.

Brave Sir Robin ran away,
Bravely ran away, away.
When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Robin turned about
And gallantly, he chickened out. Bravely taking to his feet,
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Robin.

He is packing it in and packing it up
And sneaking away and buggering up
And chickening out and pissing off home,
Yes, bravely he is throwing in the sponge.

.  So.. no one else cares about the Golden Sword/ upgrading the Master Sword thingy?

I'm surprised that no other zelda game has allowed you to upgrade the master sword, wind waker did a version of it to restore its power (which i found surprising since no other game hinted that something was needed to be done to keep its power). I hope that the new zelda has sword upgradeability like LttP.

I expected to have something in OoT myself.... Even though MM didn't have the Master Sword, it still had its own version of the upgrading thing, which was pretty cool.  The Gilded Sword was bad*** (is the second half of that word banned here??), but still not anywhere near the Golden Sword.

I think the main reason is because just changing the color of the sword is kind of boring. It worked in the 2D games because they couldn't show enough detail to actually change the way the sword looked anyway.

When you get a new sword in the 3D games they look quite a bit different from each other. Even in MM when the sword is upgraded it looks completely different, but you can't really change the look of the Master Sword because it wouldn't really be the Master Sword anymore. They worked around this by downgrading the Master Sword in the beginning of WW.

They could add extra particle effects, change the projectile attack that the sword does, make the hilt slightly different; maybe make it slightly longer; they don't have to only do a color change.

So, Mumie, you're talking of upgrading it like in Soul Calibur 2, stronger sword, shorter reach, longer reach, weaker sword, right? Still i think that having different swords has a point. You can't change the Master Sword, 'cause then it wouldn't be THE Master sword anymore, but if you want a stronger sword in OoT, just use the Giant's Knife/Biggoron's sword.
Guess I'm the only guy from the Netherlands... Oh well, just as long as I get to discuss Zelda-thingies!

When you upgraded the master sword in LttP your sword changed color, had a longer reach and the energy shot out was a little bit stronger. I think what they should do is make the master sword the last sword you can get and let you upgrade the sword you start with until you get the master sword.

I take it you haven't played ALttP, have you?  I am not talking about anything close to Soul Calibur 2, and this wouldn't be anything new for the series.  They have already had a game where you could upgrade the Master Sword.  And if they had the Golden Sword in the game, you could have a sword that is twice as powerful as the Biggoron's Sword, allows you to shoot beams at full health, and allows you to use a shield.  Translation: Bad*** .

Oh and about the 2x as strong as the Biggoron's Sword:

In ALttP, the Fighter Sword is 1x, Master Sword is 2x, Tempered Sword is 4x, and Golden Sword is 8x.
In OoT, the Kokiri Sword is 1x, Master Sword is 2x, and Biggoron's Sword is 4x.

So each sword is twice as powerful as the previous.  And for all intents and purposes, the Golden Sword is far, far, far superior to any of the two-handed swords.
