Zelda pretty much confirmed for DS in an interview ran today by Gamespy.
The interview is with Eiji Aonuma, one of the two main masterminds behind the last few Zelda games, the other mastermind being You-Know-Who.
Not much revealed yet, only that its coming...

But we can dream up some possiblities with how the DS's special capabilties may enhance gameplay, rite? Like, using voice commands when horseback riding...or a really good one I got from someone in the P-A forums: use the touch screen to scrawl simple symbols to invoke the magic of the Wind Waker...Im thinking this could be a showcase title for the DS Difference...

That's a neat idea but I'm not sure how well it would work.  First of all if you're playing in public you wouldn't want to be yelling into the mic the whole time.  Second of all there's the problem that Zelda targets a large audience so you have kids and adults playing, both of which have different sounding voices.  One of Hey You Pikachu's problems was that the voice recognition was wonky with adult voices because it was designed with higher pitched kid voices in mind.  That could be a problem here as well.

The best idea I can think of is parallel worlds like in A Link to the Past except in this case each world is on each screen so you can see both worlds at the same time and thus see how changes in one world affect the other.  This could make for some really interesting puzzles.  I'm thinking 2D because a top down view would work better for the two screens than a moving camera.  Single player as well.

Another idea could be a multiplayer Four Swords deal where the top screen shows the main view and the second screen acts like the GBA in that it shows the parts where you don't want the other players to see.  This time around though I would like four unique characters instead of just four Links and the power-ups should be permanent.  There should be no levels either.  It would be like a normal Zelda game except multiplayer.

I've never been a fan of voice commands because of quality and would CERTAINLY not be a fan of them in public for the reasons you listed.

Would rather it be mostly 1 player, if it is 2d then Maybe have a dungeon system like on Lufia 2....99 floors which are randomly created.....like that but zelda type levels with random zelda badguys and random power ups...would be fun for 2 players

The problem with random dungeons is that 1. you have to predesign puzzles anyway and 2. devs tend to get lazy "oh, just throw in one hour of random levels in there".

Oh man I HATE randomly created levels.  Aside from the fact that if you get lost or stuck you're f*cked because you can't check a guide or ask a friend for help, I can't stand the dull generic level designs that result.  Part of the fun of Zelda is the attention to detail in the dungeons.  I love how in the 3D Zeldas the dungeons actually look like a real place instead of just a level.  Leave randomly created levels for the inferior Zelda knock-offs.

Voice commands would work if you recorded what you wanted to say at a certain point, for example the animal trainer who gives you the horse goes "okay now I'll teach her to obey you". Then not only could you use personal (and humourous) commands but also they wouldn't have to make a different system for each language. Personally I would do mine in latin!

You know, thats a fascinating idea...thats one of the things about the voice technology which I am wondering about. Ive never used it before, not even on PC so I dont know whether or not its possible to synch a game to respond to voice commands issued with only the pitch of YOUR voice.
I can feel where a couple of you stand on the whole voice recognition thing....in public at any rate. Most people dont like looking silly, myself included, although I know in reality no one really gives a flying pigs foot about who I am, and why im talking to my little box. Nevertheless I feel, provided the technology is up to par, such an aspect can really add to the ease of control in a game.
And that to me is really what the DS represents right now...I cant yet see the enormous new gameplay or new ways to play games it will provide but I can TOTALLY see all the ways it can ADD to our gameplay experiences, just little things enabled by all of its touted features which makes playing games THAT much more intuitive and/or that much more involving. The touch screen for one will really streamline alot of game interfaces.

In Zelda theres the helpful dual screens so that we can have a constant map or whatever menu we choose, as the screen display can be context sensitive. Maybe they'll bring back Navi (I realize not everyone would be thrilled with this, but it beats "tingle") and have her populate one of the screens sorta the way a virtual pet does like 'Hey You Pikachu'. Theres the touch screen which likely will add all kinds of unique little twists to Zelda dungeon design. Maybe Link will find a homing boomerang that will arc out in a path you trace...or perhaps Link will cast magic by simply scrawling small shapes on the touch screen, like a small flame to light fires. Then theres voice technology, maybe the designers will add vocal puzzles where you have to to solve environmental challenges to learn a password to get to the boss room (like Lord of the Rings, "speak 'friend', and enter..")

Its in these subtle ways, smaller differences here and there, that may really add up to a compelling game experience.

You could always make the voice commands so that it sounds like you are watching a football game.

(person sits near you on a train and hears)                                    (on the screen)
Kick the ball!.......                                                                          Horse starts to move
Pass it.......                                                                                   Horse speeds up
Foul!......                                                                                       Horse slows down
Referee!......                                                                                 Horse stops
Come on Beckham!......                                                                 Draws Bow
Shoot!......                                                                                    Fires Bow
Ah, its Half Time.....                                                                       Link runs off screen to queue up for the grotty toilets  
                                                                                                  while the horse eats pies out of a nosebag

i can program my cell phone to recognize my voice for up to 10 people in my contact list. it works by me first recording my voice command. i don't think that this type of voice recognition would be a problem like that pikachu game did.

when i was watching the video on nintendo.com for the minish cap i got the idea for some kind of feature that would alert you, beep beep, or buzz buzz, when someone else has a certain item that you may need, like kinstones, i'm not exactly sure how that is supposed to work. also, it seems like the new gamecube realistic zelda will feature more toned fighting systems, well how about your walking around a train station (i don't live in a city forgive me if that comment is a bit dated) and your ds beeps and you are pulled into another dimension and have to fight one on one with a link from a parallel universe (of course it's someone sitting on the toilet in the restroom down the hall), this alternate dimension idea would go along with all the confusing timeline stuff. hehe.

i would like to see a zelda game with downloadable content. imagine you finished windwaker and were able to download or buy a new volume where the ocean is drained and it is seemless, it doesn't feel like your playing a new zelda game, it feels like the one you've been playing is just getting longer and longer and keeps expanding. like you are exploring this new land and you want to go back to the forsaken fortress or something, use some kind of musical instrument (using your touchpad) to go back in time and it's all just seemless.

how about raising a tomagatchi-like cucco on your ds and be able to sell items like bombs, or trade those stupid little flag things on windfall with actual other people instead of goron merchants? of course i don't mean bring back those stupid flags and statues but more usable items, like keys to certain areas with minigames. keys that are in short supply so to get to areas you HAVE to go out into the real world and find people with them.

ooh ooh ooh, i just got idea to photoshop some ds images. hehehehe, will be posting them in a little while, my appologies if i ranted too long :-P

first of all here is a Blank DS image since i'm so nice, and some mock-ups i made with graphic converter and claris works, you can do alot with simple software ^_^

i was going to make something more creative but i got frustrated with the lack of talent i posess. so i just shoved some other zelda games in here.

Just kidding, i have thought about this and if you look at the e3 footage you can see the goofy little comercials of office workers using the device, (instead of the lucky bastards at e3 who had to play with one that was attached to those kiosks) well anyway, they look like they are having a hard time holding the thing and trying to use the touchpad and trying to use the buttons, i guess we will have to wait and see if nintendo starts offering some kind of medical grafting so that we can all have an extra limb to use the touchpad ^_^

Duke Nukem 64 used all of the N64 controller's buttons including the L button and both the analog stick and the d-pad.  It's essentially completely f*cking impossible to work with.  Nintendo would never make something like that but don't underestimate the sheer idiocy of lesser developers.

Oh yeh, and bomberman DS uses all three things because you use the D-pad to move, the A button to bomb and if you are paralyzed then you have to use the touch screen very quickly. Obviously you aren't using all at the same time.

Well to get back on the subject, Aonuma is quoted in EGM as saying that there will be Four Swords-esque multiplayer in the Zelda DS game in development...So online Zelda multiplayer looks likely...

Well, that's gonna be a problem with basically any game that uses voice recognition on the DS; I mean, handhelds ARE meant to be portable after all.

This is my idea for Zelda DS... it would be like Super Mario 64x4 but with a twist like the gba game LTTP and 4 Swords because it would would include a multiplayer game of orcarina of time like Super Mario 64x4 but be just like 4 swords in 3d. Plus it would have the entire single player orcarina of time, and if you wanted to use the first person aim whenever you wanted to use a c button item like the bow or hookshot, it would transfer to the touch screen for you so you could aim by hand instead of the d-pad. just put the stylus on the screen, keep it on the screen, and move it around so that when you let go it would release whatever you were using. of course this would be pretty if your in a rush, but it just makes it more exciting if you think about it.
