My prediction - SK is making Zelda
« on: May 12, 2004, 03:44:26 AM »
Why? Well for one, we haven't heard from SK at all three conferences. Sony or MS would definately have said something if SK was playing on their side. Therefore, this makes me conclude they aren't third party to Nintendo but are still second or maybe even first party. now to the zelda part. A while back Dyack said he would like to do a Zelda, just like how he said he wanted to do a MGS. Also take a look this from IGN:
Quote

Neither Shigeru Miyamoto nor Eiji Aonuma will be directing the Legend of Zelda title. Both serve as producers. A new, still-secret director will helm the project.
Quote  Secret director? Why would anyone bother to keep the director a secret. It must be someone big. And since we havem't heard from SK, it could possibly be Dennis Dyack!

Whilst I'm deeply begging to doubt the whole Nintendo/SK hoax (even though I've fuled it more than anyone on multiple forums) I honestly wouldnt be surprised if Dyack was.

Maybe...but I don't really believe it.  I don't see Nintendo, a relatively serious company, creating a hoax about something so serious.  I would say in a best-case scenario, this is the last collaboration between the two companies and Nintendo decided to announce the split before showing the game so people would think Silicon Knights is still on our side, even if it is third-party.  I think even that is stretching, but it's a fun prediction.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Well, they definitely have japanese people heading the graphics department. For some reason westerners and japanese have different modeling styles, whereby I'd say the western one look more realistic.

I'm not sure about Dyack, I don't know whether he could handle Zelda. As a writer, okay, he might finally give a Zelda game a non-cliché storyline, but if ED is anything to go by, he doesn't hold the same ideals as Miyamoto on the issue. Nah, whatever. I hope Miyamoto intervenes if the gameplay gets neglected somewhere.

It could just as well be Kojima or Mikami, Dyack wanted to make something new anyway, not follow an existing franchise.

SK not anouncing any plans with any manufacturer isn't surprising, they're freelancers now and can go whereever they like. If they decided one day "Hey, let's release Duke Nukem Forev... err... Too Human on the PS2" I doubt Sony would make that a big deal out of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it were true, but it's unlikely.

And give me credit, I thought of it first in the other two threads you could have put this in.

I agree w/ KDR.  I'm not sure if Dyack could do a Zelda game.  He's style is different to that of Miyamoto & Aonuma.

And judging by the graphics, it looks it's being done in-house.

SK is in house...or was...or is more than ever...or isn't.

As much as i'd like Silicon Knights to stay the hell away from Zelda, i'm not dismissing the possibility. As well as telling EGM that "I'd like to do a mature, realistic take on Zelda...", he also said this a while ago too,

Dyack also said he "won't hint at two games in the same way". He said he'd like to do a MGS game, he did an MGS game. Means he won't use "I'd like to" as a hint anymore. At least if he's not that forgetful.

There is an interesting quote floating around the internet supposedly made by Dennis Dyack at Konami's E3 conference:

"...we are really looking forward to the future with Konami and the relationship with Nintendo."

Which really confuses things, since a month ago, that "relationship with Nintendo" seemed to have come to an end.

That definately does put an interesting spin on things... I know a lot of the attention over the announcement has focused on the Nintendo and SK relationship, but I do not think I have seen any speculation that they have become a Konami development studio. So maybe the part about SK not being held exclusively to Nintendo anymore is true since they are now part of Konami but will be wokring on Nintendo titles for Konami...

Dyack can make a zelda game, but only with the help of Miyamoto and co.  The fact that the director is kept secret is extremely strange becuase as far as I remember, this is the first time thats been done.  Directors in games arent really that big news in the industry unless its Miyamoto, Sonic's creater or I guess the guys responsible for final fantasy and the guy from capcom that does the resident evil and whatnot.  Besides those key directors, people dont really pay any mind to who's guiding the developement.  For them to keep the director a secret can only mean that its big news and it is true that Dyack is the best fit given the current situation.  Second behind Dyack I would say is the director of the resident evil games, I aint sure if I heard him say a long while ago that he also would like to do a darker zelda for nintendo.  Dont quote me on that, I cant remember too good lol.

Shigeru Miyamoto:
We have our own internal first party development studio. We also have second party development studios which are games that are developed outside of Nintendo but published by Nintendo.  [A]s of last year I have been put in charge of first party content exclusively.
last we heard, sk wasn't a first party.  therefore it's impossible for sk to be making zelda, unless miyamoto is a liar.

you're not calling miyamoto a liar, are you?

what if sk has become first party ? lol We're still debating on whats the state of sk, their contract has finished but all the secrecy around it makes you wonder if they've really gone 3rd party of if they are 1st party now.  Who know's, its all just wishful thinkin but you never know, nintendo has been making changes as of late.

IGN has an interview up with Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo's VP of corporate affairs, with this interesting quote:

Quote

IGN: We just bumped into Denis Dyack, president of Silicon Knights, as he was on his way into a Nintendo meeting. So what kind of plot are you hatching?

Perrin Kaplan: There is nothing that precludes us from having a relationship. I mean, they may make a product for DS or otherwise. But it's just purely as a second-party -- that part of the relationship has changed.

Seems a little odd the Kaplan offered up that SK is doing a DS title when the question wasn't really asking that directly. Also I think it other telling part is where SK is refered to as a second-party developer.

So Perrin states SK is a second party.  What the hell is going on here?  I also find it strange that IGNs question was "What plot are you hatching?".

By the way, I think theres a chance SK could be making the new Zelda, and I definately think they copuld.  Denis is a huge fan of the series, so I think he would get the feel right.

Omen: I said before that he said he won't hint in the same way twice AND I think he said he'd like to work on something original next.

I like how Kaplan pretends that the style in LoZ was a "purely artistic descision". Artistic my rear end, you know more people will buy it now.
What got me was Miyamoto saying "as Link changes, so do I". Does that mean he'll make more adult-themed games now?

Actually it is artistic, they want to depict Link as an adult hence the 3D style.

As for Miyamato's quote I think you're reading too much into it.

He may have said that to get us off the scent, though.  He also said they were looking forward to working on an original game with Konami.

You guys, SK isn't Nintendo exclusive anymore, just get over it. That doesn't mean that SK won't continue to make games for Nintendo. The SK team may be making the new Zelda, but that doesn't mean they're exclusive to Nintendo. Capcom made some Zelda games, and they aren't exclusive...

Bad analogy.  Capcom was never a second party to begin with.  And i'm not saying SK are exclusive anymore, but theres definitely something strange going on.   As far as I can tell, SK could be first party, or be making no games for Nintendo ever again...a wide spectrum of possibilities.

I don't know if you've resolved this already, but in the quote she says that's the part of the relationship that changed (second party status).  I also think that Kaplan's mentioning of SK making a DS game was to prove that SK will still work on a Nintendo in the future.
I really doubt this theory that SK is first party- that just seems more like Microsoft's modus operandi as opposed to that of Nintendo.
