Pretty cool stuff. I now know for sure I'll be purchasing one. It sounds like it is shaping up to be a nifty system.

I'm very interested to see what they do with this game.  I hope it's more than a four-player remake.  The character models are looking pretty nice though!  Practically as good as they do in Mario Kart: Double Dash...which is either really insulting to that game or really impressive for this game.

This game looks pretty cool though I'm hoping it's got a strong single player.  Hopefully it includes Super Mario 64 as a one player mode with some new levels.  Of course it would be even better if the single player was an entirely new game but that's probably not going to happen.

Make No Mistake I want to try a DS i just still have some questions about 3D Gaming without the controls.

I've been thinking that too.  Same with the PSP, although I have no interest in it.

Yeah, I hope Nintendo revises the design to include a recessed anlogue stick. The gamecube controller changed even after playable prototypes were ahown. They could leave a space on the top so the system can close okay.

The PSP DOES have an analoge thing, but it's tiny and in the same retarded place as the right analogue stick on the PS controller - down and right of the D pad. It's that thing that looks like a microphone on the bottom left. Also, sonce the PSP doesn't close, it could be broken off or damaged.

the PSP is so lame! I've copmpared it to the Atari Lynx. Hace you heard about the "Killer App Metal Gear" on PSP? IT'S A CARD GAME! Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!!

Is the PSP still gonna look like that oversized keychain.  I hope not.  Im planning on getting the DS anyway.  The 2.5D mario looks sweet.

If you go over to ign.com the have a pic of the psp it does have a circular buttion on the left side.  Not sure if its an analog stick though.

3D controls without analog is definitely a concern, I'm actually surprised Nintendo didn't address it, because I always felt the lack of analog control was a considerable drawback for a lot of Playstation games.  Hopefully Nintendo will either reconsider or  at least put a lot of effort into making the games work well with digital control.

This game had me laughing the entire time I was looking at the screenshots.  Freaking awesome.  This made me want to buy a DS. . . I'm not a big handheld guy, so I dunno if I will, but things are looking very good for ze old DS.  Mario 64x4 looks very, very cool.

Anyone ever think about how an analog stick would wear out eventually?  THAT is why we aren't going to see an analog stick on the DS...

Nope.

Actually, it does. That round thing below the d-pad that many people have thought to be a speaker is, in fact, an analog control.

Very solid article on the PSP here.

I think it's incredibly ironic that Sony has always downplayed the importance of the analog stick for 3D gaming yet they included one on their portable and Nintendo didn't.  Ever since Nintendo went 3D the analog stick has been the way to go.  Virtually every one of their N64 titles only had analog control and the Cube controller is so analog stick centric the d-pad seems like it was merely thrown on to keep third parties happy.  The Playstation controller has always been d-pad centric to the point that it seems like Sony refuses to admit their original control design was inferior and they can't admit Nintendo's idea was better.  The analog sticks on the PS2 controller look like they were thrown on where they wouldn't interfere with the "superior" original controller design.

Anyway I just find it interesting that Sony thinks it's worth putting one on and Nintendo doesn't.  While I think dropping it because it's too fragile for a portable is a good reason it's going to make games like Mario 64 harder to play.  The stylus controls for the Metroid Prime for example sound complicated as hell and I hope Nintendo doesn't think that's a suitable replacement for an analog stick.  Plus since the DS has a protective cover they probably could have thrown one on provided they had a "hole" for it in the cover.  The DS comes across as the most flexible game system ever in terms of control options for developers yet it's excluded the most important controller addition of the 3D era.  Plus now it's possible for a PSP game to not be playable on the DS.  The whole advantage was that the DS could do everything the PSP can plus more.

What?  Since when do you absolutely NEED an analog stick to play 3d games?  Saying that a PSP game can't be playable on the DS just for that reason is completely inductive...

"What? Since when do you absolutely NEED an analog stick to play 3d games?"

Well Splinter Cell would be completely unplayable without analog movement.  Looking at my own collection the only other title I can think of that would be virtually unplayable without it would be Wave Race.  It's kind of hard to tell exactly which games absolutely need it because so many games have used it so well it's hard to imagine how they would have been done without it.  All I'm saying is that's it's possible to make a game on the PSP that relies heavily on precise movement that would be hard to make playable on the DS.

Not a Nintendo game, but Ape Escape would have been impossible without a Dualshock controller. It used every single button on it, as well as the analog movement of the sticks.

I think Waverace wouldn't be too tough without analog. Just short taps or long holds to control the intensity of your turning.

Now, all of that said, why can't the d-pad on the DS be analog? (In the same way that the Dualshock 2's buttons are.) The DS d-pad could be either velocity- or pressure-sensetive, as could any of the other buttons on the DS.

What's the problem with digital controls? My Sidewinder Pad has served me well through many a 3d game. The only game I thought would benefit from analog controls is Kurukuru Kururin.
If you absolutely, 100% need analog controls, use the touchscreen for that. You can use it with your thumb. You can't use both the touchscreen and the dpad (or ts + buttons), but you can't use the analog and digital at the same time on the PSP, either. With the DS you can at least choose whether you take the dpad or the buttons, with the PSP you always have to swap the dpad for the analog stick.
BTW, that analog looks like it's in an awful, cramp-inducing position.

Thing is Analog makes 3D games play heck of alot better. Just play super mario sunshine and try to imagine your playing it with the dpad... an analog stick gives you 360 degrees of control, the dpad is alot limited imo

Btw, An Analog stick type control was entirely possible, without it breaking or wearing down. I was thinking something possibly like what the old Neo Geo Pocket Color had. Its not trully an analog stick but its not simply a dpad...

I don't know about Sunshine, but Rayman 2 works perfectly well with a digital pad. It's not like you couldn't rotate the camera if you absolutely have to hit that specific orientation.
