please share thoughts on these old games
« on: May 07, 2004, 09:15:37 PM »
I just bought 17 NES games.  I'll list them, please share anything on the ones I list that I only knew of by name recognization.  Also how rare would you say some of them are, I thought a few might be.  Does anyone have any good stories associated with these games?  Alot of them bring back nostalgic ones for myself.

Track & Field
Track & Field 2
Tecmo Baseball
Strider
Base Loaded
Blaster Master
Faxanadu (woohoo)
Star Tropics
Tecmo Bowl
Defender 2 (made by Hal America Inc, did Hal Nintendo make this?)
Metal Gear
Golf
and these (name recognized):  does anyone know about them?
Legacy of the Wizard (rare?)
Star Tropics 2: Zodas Revenge
8 Eyes (rare?)
Hydlide (rare?)
Ultima Exodus (rare?)

Star Tropics 2 was released in 1994 I think which makes it one of the last NES games to be released.  Since it was ignored at the time of release I imagine it's fairly rare.

All I know of Hydlide is that I hear it's really bad.

The only games in that list I've played for any significant amount of time are Metal Gear and Defender II.  I find that Metal Gear is really hard and seems quite dated.  The concept was ahead of it's time and really didn't get fully developed until MGS.  Defender II is a port of the arcade game (also known as Stargate).  It's pretty fun but it doesn't have the Inviso or Hyperspace features.  I would consider the NES version of Defender II to be obsolete since Midway Arcade Treasures for the Cube provides an arcade perfect port.

I've heard of most of those other games but I haven't played them.  Though I have played the Genesis version of Strider.

MG is hard, it took me two years as a wee lad to beat it.  Hmm Inviso and hyperspace?  DF2 is obsolete I got Midway Arcade T. but I figured it could be rare and it was cheap.  Hmm I should pick up the last copy of Star Tropics 2 then, and Toys RUs used to have 10 new copies for cheap as H3ll five years ago damnit lol.

I had the original Star tropcis. . . I don't believe I knew there was a second Star Tropics. The first one was a lil' rpg that I thought was pretty cool back in the day, although I'm certain it doesn't hold up too well anymore. . . pretty simplistic, perhaps plotless. . . but it has a charm.

I think Ultima Exodus is somewhat sought after, but don't quote me on that one.

Also I'd like to mention for no good reason that Trog is one of the most underrated NES game out there. That game can be bloody good fun especially if you've got a competitive friend with you.

Your heart felt good. It was dripping with pitch and made of wood.

F*ck yeah!  That game rocks.  For my brothers and I it's easily in our personal top ten NES games lists.  Some research reveals that the NES version is actually a port of an arcade game that's FOUR PLAYERS.  And it's made by Midway.  WHY IS TROG NOT IN MIDWAY ARCADE TREASURES 2?!

You can check out some info on Trog here.  That's the arcade version but it's pretty similar to the NES one and I couldn't find any info on the NES one.  It's like Pac-Man but with two players.

Ultima Exodus is great.  You should really enjoy it.  But I dont think its rare.

I'll post some impressions perhaps soon.  I just finished taking off all the used stickers on the games and cleaning them.  Damn Gamestop puts two used stickers on each game!  Anyways I found the most useful item for cleaning NES games is Q-tips.

Joe:

An interesting selection.  I'll provide feedback where I can.

StarTropics & StarTropics II:

The original StarTropics is one of my favorite games for the NES.  The sequel, unfortunately, I found to be a bit lackluster. It's hard to pinpoint where exactly the second game fails.  While the original wasn't nonlinear, it certainly did a better job of conveying a feeling of openness.  The second game feels more confined and less difficult.  Also, I think some were disappointed with the story arc of the sequel, which is radically different from the original, although I'll always a hold a fond place in my heart for the Oxford Wonder World.

Faxanadu & Legacy of the Wizard:

Both of these games were developed by Falcom.  The former was brought to the U.S. by Hudson, the latter by Broderbund.  Both are sidescrolling adventures with a focus on fantasy, but that's where the similarities end.  Faxanadu has better graphics and is more tightly constructed.

The best way to describe Legacy of the Wizard is as a sidescrolling version of the original Zelda.  The game is disturbingly nonlinear and gives absolutely no hints on how to progress.  There are five playable characters (father, mother, son, daughter, and dog) each with unique abilities, which seems pretty cool at first . . . until you've progressed one way in the dungeon for thirty minutes and find that the particular character that you've selected can go no further.

The game is incredibily difficult and despite spending 100 - 150 hours of my youth on the game, the farthest I ever got was defeating the first of five bosses.  Unless you use a FAQ, be prepared to make a detailed map of the dungeon and suffer plenty of headaches.

Hydlide:

I hope this game is rare, if only for the fact that it would warm my heart that most of the videogaming populace was spared this atrocity.  From the Gamecube to the NES, I own 150+ games and this is certainly the worst of the bunch.  I can't believe this game was released at the same time as Dragon Warrior and the Legend of Zelda.  To peruse Hydlide's crimes against humanity, view the following document:

Since it's possible to get 50% off any nes, snes, genesis, n64, and DC games right now I headed back to Gamespot.  (use your Gamespot card 10% off, coupon from Game Informer 10% off, and 30% off any games for the systems I listed above right now at Gamestop)

Anyways I picked up 7 more Nes games.  Maybe some of these will jog people's memories, they're better than most I listed before albeit more expensive.

Double Dragon 2
Tiger-Heli
Iron Tank
Commando
Gunsmoke
Golf Challenge Pebble Beach (thanks for the advice SUPER)
Renegade (think of River City Ransom minus the shops)

Share your thoughts.

Gunsmoke was some great vertical-scrolling fun

Don't find the other games you got too great though...I recommend you pick up Jackal, which is a 1-2 player war Jeep game...Oh man that game is fun... ^_^

StarTropics was cool, but I always thought the controls were kind of poor...it seemed like Zelda and Crystalis both did the same style of control much better, and earlier too.  Still, I liked the theme and graphics in StarTropics.  The plot was fun trash too.  Wasn't that game published by Nintendo?  It would be cool to see the hero, Mike, in a new Super Smash Bros. if it's possible.
That's my opinion, not yours.

Renegade is fun, though slightly inferior to RCR.  And good old Commando  My second game ever for the NES back in '86.  Not a great game, but back then I played it non-stop.  I'll never forget begging my Mom to buy me Commando , Ghosts and Goblins and Castlevania.  And getting them at later dates.  Good times...i may go invest in some of these games myself.
