« on: May 04, 2004, 04:54:34 PM »
Sorry about posting here but everbody reads heres only (yes all 20 of you!), just kidding.
this is just to let you know that PGC is the best and most original website out here. Take a look at these begining paragraphs for a preview of Doom 3......read the first 2 paragraphs,

IGN article,
http://xbox.ign.com/articles/510/510917p1.html

GI article,
http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200405/N04.0504.1446.35077.htm

See where they both say "this isn't your daddys Doom"? These dudes totally use each others work!! funny huh?
So much for Too Human!!
"Nintendo, where dreams never come true"
Mario Tennis, Too Human, Eternal Darkness 2.

I mean arrrgghhh I hate writing cliches, and I always double check over my reviews to make sure I didn't put any in there. (lol a 900-lb gorrilla worth writing home about lol)

It's kind of dumb for them to use the "your daddy's game" cliche when Doom is only ten years old.  How many people who read either web site weren't born yet when Doom came out?  That cliche is only good for games that are old enough that if they were people they could be a parent.

While we're making fun of other sites have you noticed that whenever you read a preview or a "hands on" the article is almost always positive no matter what the game is?  A game will get creamed in a review and the worst the preview will have said is "we'll see how this turns out".  For once I would love to read "well this game looks like it's going to be lame.  It will take a miracle for them to save this dog."  It's like most previews are just ads for the game.

Previews never say if the game is rubbish. I always read previews and they're like "oh it doesn't have much going at the moment, but this will change over the months! Keep an eye out for this game!". Then like two months later the game gets reviewed with a 2% score.

"SUPERMAN HAS LOTS OF FOG AT THIS STAGE, BUT TITUS HAS LOTS OF TIME TO FIX THAT PROBLEM. THIS GAME WILL BE HOT WHEN IT COMES OUT"

LATER

"OH THIS GAME IS A HEAP OF ELEPHANT CRAP, 0/100"

If a game plays like a dead dog in its near-completed stage, I want to know about it. Oh, this thread is about Doom 3. Um. Yeah. You need the blue key.

I definitely agree with you Inferno Munchy.  You don't know how many times when reading the previews sections in my PC Gamer mag., the writer would say the game has the potential to be good, while I can tell it's going to flat out suck (or not live up to it's potential).  And when the review comes up, bingo, the game gets a crap score.

So technically, woudn't saying "this isn’t your daddy’s Doom" narrow the audience to those under 10? Should I expect to see teletubbies?

I like Gamespy's previews, they have a little box with pros and cons even on the previews, so you can easily see aspects that are weak in the current stage, even if they aren't mentioned in the review text (or in a way you'll easily overread them).

The thing I hate is when 'respected' games journalists hype a game to such a level where they have to use common trash talk to do it.
If it's not taken out of a press release, it's emphasized with 10 billions extra exclamation marks. And some form of trashy sex talk, eg 'DOOM WILL MAKE YOU IT'S BITCH'....and the like.

Frankly, it's annoying.

Ahaha, flashbacks of Nintendo Magazine System.
"South Park 64 WILL be the game of the YEAR!!!!!!!! Although the game is only 60% complete so far, it's ALREADY better looking than ANY PlayStation, PC or Saturn game. THEY CANNOT HANDLE THE POWER. NINTENDO CAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Then the 'tard gave it 99% a few months later.

I actually remember once in N64 magizine they said there was no hope for Hercules, and damn were they right.

I guess if magazines give the games they prieview a bleak outlook then they'll stop being supplied and gain a disadvantage.

BTW: What magazines did people here read from the 64 era? I'm interested. I started off with N64 magazine... I liked its sense of a good game and its import reviews. I then switched to N64 Gamer, then stopped buying magazines about half-way through Troy's time as the editor.

N64 era um EGM, Next Generation, & GAMEFAN!!!!!

EGM was decent (probably better back then, I don't read it anymore)
Next Generation was unique.
Gamefan absolutely ruled, excellent design, rare game articles, Japan coverage, anime coverage, best rumor section (not just bogus crapioli either), best screenshot grabs.
I remember the first time I read their magazine they had Killer Instinct screenshots that just made every other mags shots look like ancient manuscripts, I was floored.

"BTW: What magazines did people here read from the 64 era?"

I believe during that time I bought two issues of Gamepro and one issue of EGM.  I didn't own an N64 until 2000 though and by that point I had access to the internet.  I also have the Gamepro issue that covers E3 1996!  That was the debut of playable N64 games and damn did that article not get me excited.  It's really interesting to read that issue now as a lot of the N64 games shown never showed up (including the original Kirby's Air Ride back when it looked like something worth playing) and some subtle changes were made to the other games.  Mario Kart 64 for example is called Mario Kart R and the screenshots show Magikoopa as a playable character instead of Donkey Kong.  The really interesting part is the blurb on Goldeneye as it's treated by the writer as a generic licensed FPS and is virtually ignored.  The writer even questions how successful a game based on a movie will do so late after the movie came out.  Man that game just snuck up on everyone.

I actually like IGN.  I don't hate them.  They're not at the point where you can think what the hell thats so innapropriate in a gaming kind of way, like saying, "its kiddy".  Now GI I really hate.  I'm not a Mario Party fan but when they said things like ,"only a retard would like this game", then I'm disgusted.

Right now I like EGM and Gamepro.  A lot of times when I hear people say it sucks I believe they just don't accept their oppinion.  Oppinion is oppinion.

Does anybody know any GCN/GBA only magazines other than Nintendo Power?  For the N64 they had ones like Total 64, N-Gamer, VGs for N64, Q64, and now I don't see crap.

For me, PC Gamer (uk version) and NGC are the purest, least crap-filled magazines out there. I have yet to have found another gaming magazine with their quality and excellence.

Gamespot very often uses copy and paste reviews.  It's common.   Just change a few words here and there, adjust the score and you have a new review!

For me, the magazines I bought were Nintendo Magazine System (NMS) and N64 Gamer. Those were the only two Nintendo mags in Australia.
There was also 64, and N64 Magazine, but those were british.

NMS was good in that it was the official mag, but the only thing that made em stand out were the mailbags (Les' Mailbag and Skull's Mailbag) where people could get away with profanity and drawings of nude characters and sexual connotations (Nintendo or otherwise, but the subject was always Les' mysterious, drug-addicted, Transylvanian nurse and caretaker, Nursie ). It was a sordid place i tells ya!
N64 Gamer was good too. It was good cause it was an unofficial mag, and the differences between it and NMS were ginormous. If there was a game that was bad to them, the review was just a huge rant. Their review of a Sesame Street game comes to mind, when it was a one page round-table about rubber chickens and why Big Bird is called Big Bird

Both mags got boring after a while. I grew out of the humour after a few years, and both are now out of print. NMS went first back in 2000, N64 Gamer lasted longer, turning into 'Nintendo Gamer', and went out early last year.
I've pretty much stopped buying magazines now - I spend it on games, social occasions and food, and whatever left is for me to save up.

I need a job
And I hope one will come soon now that I've actually applied!

Man, was that a life story liek WHAT =/
