Thirty DS Titles at E3
« on: April 09, 2004, 08:51:54 AM »
Reports out of Japan state that Nintendo will have thirty titles on display for its new handheld at E3.

Magazine publisher Enterbrain reported earlier today that Nintendo was the top game publisher last year, selling more than 6.5 million games.  It's closest competitor was Square, which sold approximately 4 million units.

A large portion of Nintendo's sales were due to Game Boy Advance software and Enterbrain President Hirokazu Hamamura is eagerly anticipating the Nintendo DS.  "This will be a product unlike anything available right now and it will come with a touch panel," said Hamamura, adding that Nintendo is prepared to showcase thirty titles at the E3 Expo next month.

As usual, Nintendo is being rather tight-lipped on their E3 line-up, but we'll keep you informed as we learn more.

If this is true, then Nintendo can't possably make 30 games by themselves. That must mean that there is some heavy third party support behind the DS. WooHoo!

This is a VERY smart move on Nintendo's part- the biggest obstacle that the DS will have to overcome is lack of games, and if they can dispell this notion as early as the official unveiling, it won't have time to brew and take place in people's minds regardless of whether or not it's true. Showing strong support now is a great idea.

30 games makes me think there maybe some N64 re-releases.  Fine by me, as long as there are some new RPGS and a portable Goldeneye.

I don't care how many games there are...

It's how good they are that counts.

I'm blown away. 30 Titles?! I wonder if they'll all be available for launch or if some will be "early betas". IIRC, the GBA only had like 17 games available for the launch.

Guess there's no better way to dispel the "Virtual Boy Advance" skeptics than to whip out an ungodly amount of titles from the get-go.

I have 3 worries.

1) That the DS will cost loads
2) That it will be very bulky and heavy
3) That is will guzzle power.

Its Nintendo.  They know what they're doing and they'll avoid those three things.  As for the 30 games, im really exicted.  E3 is gonna ROCK!  Wish I could go, I'll be in LA that week going to the Square concert.

1) "Rumor" has it that Nintendo's shooting for the same price range that the GameBoy series of handhelds has always maintained. But yeah, I'm a little worried that Nintendo might have to "bend" that rule upward a little. Everyone always bitches that the newest GameBoy is too expensive compared to the old one (for a while anyways), but if it's at a "record high" cost (for a Nintendo portable at launch), that'll add fuel to the fire. Even though it could likely be hundreds of dollars cheaper than the PSP. I'd say I'm more worried that Nintendo might delay the NDS to wait for the costs to come down.

2) I'm imagining a classic-style GBA, with the top half of a GBA-SP hinged onto the top of it. It seems like the most obvious design, and I really can't comprehend a better design for it yet (surprise me in a good way here Nintendo).

3) I'm concerned about that one too. This thing will have not one, but two GBA-sized screens. Backlit even, not frontlit like the GBA-SP. Nintendo's move to Lithium-Ion batteries in the GBA-SP was a great move, and Sony seems to have looked at it and said "Battery concerns are a thing of the past now! Run your toaster off our new handheld!", and I must say that I'm worried that just having a Li-Ion battery isn't enough to go crazy with. But, this is Nintendo we're talking about. I'm willing to take "good battery life" completely on faith, just as Sony will still have "good third party support" despite glaringly obvious shortfalls (unless the PSP is the console where Sony finally falls flat on their face, but it'll have good support at the start).

30, hey?  Solid number.  Very nice.

However, this doesn't mean it'll have at least 30 games by launch, this is just how many they could be showing at E3.  Though the fact that they've got that many to show is pretty impressive nonetheless.

The games, especially if there are some AAA titles, will probably be spread out release date-wise just because that's a smarter thing to do to maintain interest in the system and to have steady sales.

I wonder if the system's really easy to develop on, or easy to port to?  That might explain that solid number.

I saw a preview video of "Death Jr.", a game on the PSP, so if the DS is going to compete against the PSP (despite the fact that they say it doesn't directly compete with it, it would still probably have to), hopefully it has impressive 3D games.  I love "oldskool" games, 2D games, simple games, and graphics don't really matter to me, but I'm sure it will matter to a lot of people.

If one of those is a Zelda title, I will buy this system at launch.

I might do so anyway even if there isn't a Zelda title.  But that just depends.  But my buying this system is unquestionable as soon as Zelda is put in the mix.

Coolness. I was skeptical about the DS (or whatever the hell it is called) at first, but i've come around to the brilliance of the idea. A whole new way of playing, we forget that only 10-20% of the population are gamers. I see this as Nintendo trying to capture the other 80-90%.

Hah!  Yeah, it'll probably be Ocarina of Time for, what, the FOURTH time now?  Or is it the fifth?

30 games is pretty cool.  How many Cube games were shown at it's first E3?  Probably not even half that.  Though I wonder how long it took for the GBA to have 30 games.  Probably not that long and assuming this includes third party titles a lot of those games probably won't even be that good.  But it's nice to have such a large number.  I was worried that the DS would be too hardcore for most developers and would only have like two launch titles and then die a year later with a total of ten games released.  That's less likely now.

Hmmm... my prediction for who else is getting in on the DS action from the get-go:

1)Sega
2)Capcom
3)Konami
4)Namco

Any other guesses?

This is great news thats sure to ease peoples worries about support. To add to this the psp does not have the graphics people have been ranting about. People were claiming it had ps2 graphics, sadly watching the death junior video the game reminds me more of a  n64 game with bad textures. So with the match up graphically I can't wait to see which direction this goes.

Not sure about Capcom, but Electronic Arts is also on board.

Square/Enix was still considering it too last I heard. Final Fantasy Tactics DS anyone?
